I'm not sure if that's true or not. I want to say it's not true, but then again, I could also make sense of it not being good to do.
I think you just have to ask yourself which is more important to you... having healthy hands, or cracking them. (assuming it's not good)
No, it's a myth. I have arthritis and every arthritis doctor I've had has confirmed that it is indeed a myth and will not cause or worsen existing arthritis.
Good to know cause I do it a lot, especially while tactiling...and I already have arthritis! Lol.
But the more my joints get arthritic, the easier it is for them to pop! That is just weird if it does nothing. I'm not sure I'd totally dismiss the idea. Popping a joint is wear and tear, and sometimes it hurts.

The idea has been dismissed and wishing it weren't so doesn't change the facts
Cracking one's knuckles doesn't cause arthritis and isn't wear and tear...fact
I hope it is a myth because I have always been bad about doing it. My ankles pop all the time and I don't even do that on purpose.
A lot of my joints pop without my trying to pop them or wanting them to too, so I'm also glad to know it won't worsen my arthritis. I wouldn't be surprised if it's more common in arthritic people. I know I can't move my wrists without them constantly popping. And it's not like they pop once and it's over. When I am tactile signing, there is a constant stream of joint cracking and popping going on.

"Another study indicated that while knuckle cracking was not associated with arthritis, it was associated with damage to ligaments that surround the joint and dislocation of tendons. While cracking your knuckles is not linked to causing arthritis, there may be a connection to soft tissue injuries."
"In 1990, a researcher looked at the hand function in 200 adults, age 45 and above. He didn't find a greater tendency toward arthritis in the 74 habitual knuckle crackers, but the knuckle crackers were more likely to have swollen hands and reduced hand strength."
I have noticed that there are certain joints that I can pop (left talonavicular, left shoulder) which have arthritis. On the contralateral side I cannot pop the right talonavicular/shoulder joints, which have no arthritis. I can also pop them multiple times in a short span of time, too short for gas to get back inside the joint. So I would not write it off even though retrospective case based studies have found no association between cracking joints and arthritis... yet. A prospective study would shed more light on causal relationship. If it has wear and tear on supporting soft tissues then ultimately the joint space itself may also erode.
I saw a report on the news or 60mins, can't remember which one, and this doctor cracked the knuckles on just one hand, for 50 years, result: no difference whatsoever, he did x-rays and everything to look for any sign of arthritis or other damage.
it's a complete and utter wives tale. Crack away.
