Or IV drug users. It can be pretty dangerous, depending on the organism. Some people who get the bad organisms would even need to get replacement heart valves in order to survive. Others only need long-term antibiotics. The vegetations can embolize into other organs or small vessels of the extremities.

Yeah, it can be pretty bad and completely debilitating. My GM caught a virus which in the end resulted in Endocarditis, she went from a pretty active old lady who lived alone and mowed her own yard/took care of her household and traveled alot to someone who had to be cared for due to the damage to her heart valve. She was/is not a candidate for a replacement valve. She does ok now but cannot be very active at all, even a trip to the grocery store tends to wear her out.
