I have this nasty habit of "hocking up phlegm" It grosses my fiance out and sometimes grosses myself out. I can't seen to help it. I always have phlegm in my throat and it gets annoying, so I hock a loogie. Does anyone know of a way to get rid of the phlegm or at least stop hocking up loogies?

If you have constant excess phlegm, it could be caused by a viral or bacteria infection or allergies, or food issues.
Those are a few causes that come to mind.
Does your diet include a lot of dairy? If so, you may want to avoid it altogether for a period of time and see whether you have less phlegm.
Do you smoke?
I'd get to the root of the problem and learn why you have excess phlegm.
So much phlegm is not a good sign. Your body is telling you something with this symptom.
But better to expel it as opposed to swallowing it.
And you could be courteous and not do it around your fiance.

I'm more grossed out reading threads about it than hearing or watching someone do it.

It is not normal. Start with your family physician.

I was told a long time ago that I have asthma. I was recently told that I don't have asthma, but I do have severe heartburn which gets into my trachea and causes asthma like symptoms. I have always had excess phlegm, I have tried several things. Like: honey and lemon, steam, and others. I don't drink milk or eat much dairy because I know it supposedly causes mucus buildup. I have no allergies that I know of, but I have never been tested. I am going to try an cut out gluten from my diet for a while.

My doctor doesn't seem too concerned about it.

This isn't normal.
You may have a fungal infection.
You need to see a specialist for this condition.

I have this problem as well. I know it sounds gross but sometimes I have to get it out right then or I will be throwing up from it gagging me. I have it most in the morning when I first wake up and after I eat. I get it some throughout the day too. Have you had any luck figuring out what it is yet? I could use your advise if you have. It feels good not being the only one going through this.

When you ummm....... "hock up a loogie" are you one of those guys that spits it out onto the sidewalk, the road, the parking lot, the yard?

Or...... do you carry kleenex with you and politely, surreptitiously and quitely deposit your "loogie" in said kleenex?

If it is the former, I don't blame your fiance for being grossed out......or even embarrassed to be seen with you.

If it is the latter, kudos to you.
