Lyrica has really helped my husband-a lot! He takes that and Ultram and tries to walk a lot everyday.
To those who think someone chooses to feel better or can when they want to--shame on you and I hope you never get this condition. My husband can't do a lot somedays. Sometimes he can't get out of bed but on days when he is feeling some better(he always hurts!!) he tries to get out and do things. I don't assume he is faking just because he "tries" to do what he can when he can.
When it comes to Fibromyalgia, it all depends on the individual on what helps. I know people that exercise helps, some medicines. I know a woman that said Lyrica saved her life. I have been diagnosed now for 7 years and I have not found anything to help. I have tried swimming, exercise, changing my eating habits, vitamins of all kinds, and medications. Nothing seems to help. Every person is different and we have to learn how to cope with the pain in our own way. I am still trying to find the way for me to cope. I wish that they could find a cure for this conditions but since they do not know the cause I do not see how they will. I just ask God to help everyone of us that has this problem and hope that he helps the people that don't understand that we are not just sick in the head we have a physical problem.
You are so right. I have put up with this affliction for over 40 years....yes ..40 years. I have had terrible times, and times that aren't too bad. Now it is combined with my aging ( I am 75). Like most of us who have it, we look fine ! (I even still have all of my normal hair color.)
I have tried most of the treatments that have been recommended. Some seem to help for awhile. Some don't help at all. I never know if the treatment helped, or if it was just a normal breather in the symptoms. They do wax and wane.
Sometimes the weather causes a flair up. Other times it doesn't bother me at all. Sometimes exercise really hurts, other times it helps.
And the unknowing can be so rude ! Their rudeness can almost hurt worse than the affliction !

Once again...agreed...different things work for different people. I don't use prescription medications to manage mine. I use OTC pain meds (Advil, Tylenol, etc) and a combination of a stretching/exercize program (devoloped by my massage therapist who also has fibro) and Zero Balancing. So far it's working very well. I was diagnosed in college about 8 years ago and had a hard time dealing with it until I found this particular massage therapist who has helped a great deal. I'm not a fan of those that want to tell me it's all in my head or that it's a psych issue (I had an instructor in Paramedic School that insisted it was a psych issue). I always tell them to take a walk in my shoes for a while and usually the conversations end in agreeing to disagree. I'm one of the lucky few that found something that works.
I know what you mean about some doctors. My guess is that if one doesn't understand the condition, all of a sudden we are dismissed as complainers. Somedays are very difficult to get out of bed let alone do something during the day. I live near Chattanooga, TN and as far as I can tell there aren't too many doctors that know much about Fibro. I have not as of yet been diagnosed with fibro but all the doctors I been to have stated all tests are normal. Not too surprising. One doctor, WHITCOMB METHOD: Home of the Fibromyalgia Relief Center I talked to told me fibro was caused by the pulling on the sack (manengese I think), that covers the brain and spine. The nerves that go through that sack, if you will, get irritated and fire. Depending on where the nerves are irritated determines where you'll feel the pain. Kind of like if you hit your funny bone and the pain is felt in your hand, even though you did nothing to your hand. This can all be a theoretical explaination, but it sure seems possible. He is in Tahoe so it's impossible for me to see him because I'm unable to work at present. I personally am having a rough time dealing with this condition because I can't find help locally. If anyone knows of anything please let me know.
I have Lyme and I also have fibro. I address the lyme once I start having symptoms like fibro. The best solution for me with fibro is acupuncture, the pain will be gone with in 2-3 visits.
I am sure ther are many primary ailments psycolgical or physical that manifest themselves with symptoms like fibro / muscular pain. Ultimatle you will have to treat the problem not just the sysmptom.
I have not been definitely diagnosed with fibromyalgia yet. I have a lot of unexplained muscle pain. I started Lyrica yesterday along with a 7 day dose pack of a steroid. I finally went to the Dr. after a long putting it off. The scary thing is all the small bumps in the back muscles that feel like they have small peas embedded. Not just a few but literally dozens. I thought they were lipomas which run in my family but the Dr. say's not. They are cause by the spasms I've been having. I have to be careful just sitting down or getting up. Getting into bed or getting out of bed can be challenging some days. The thing that really has me worried that someone may relate to is that if I pick up much weight say over 7-8 lbs I feel a soreness type of pain in my quads. I can't account for that at all as there has been no injury to relate it to.
Within 2 days of taking Lyrica my pain has been reduced quite a bit. So of course I asked my arthritis dr if I could quit taking them since I feel better and she just laughed at me (in a nice way). The one thing I will say is my dr had to fight with my insurance company to get this drug for me. I did get it but still have to pay $45 and the pain patches for my lumbar stenosis they would not cover. But that is another story I could go into. Best of luck to all of you suffering from fibro.
My mom has it and she was diagnosed after a. her kids had left home and she had no purpose in life, b. she was left alone and had little attention, and c. got a part time job (first job in her life) that she constantly complained about and fell on the job, breaking a bone. That was 16 years ago and she still complains about it all the time. But what I've noticed (and other family members noticed) was that it doesn't prevent her from doing what she wants to do. It prevents her from doing what she doesn't want to do anyway, like cooking, cleaning, contacting anyone, etc. I think there's definitely a psychological aspect to it, but then I don't have it so I can't say with certainty.
if your mom has it she wouldn't just be able to do what she wants and then complain when there's work or something she dont want. you would notice that most the time she cant do much of anything at all. maybe she's faking a disease they dont have a blood test for yet.

see now this is true thats like me i try to do what i can but when i cant i dont and im in constant pain. that was in my head 15 years now. when i get energy or feel okay like the lyrica got me sitting up now i dont have to go to the nearest rug every 15 min. to take the pressure off my thoracic any more so it really helps the burn. but on bad days i go to that bed pretty quick sometimes i cry because i have work and dont want to be a bad companion or partner i only work at home cried when i couldn't be reliable one day out of the week cause lyrica after a while dont help as much so i have to take lortab or even as strong as percocet i hate drugs.
