I have to fast for 12 hours tonight before having a Cholesterol/Diabetes test at 9:30am tomorrow morning. Too late to call anyone with this question-- tomorrow morning before the test, is it OK to drink water? How about plain black tea w/ no sugar, lemon or milk added?
Will try to look further online for this info, but would appreciate it if anyone has an answer for this. Thanks.
I have always had my draws early, like 7AM or so and I've always been told nothing after midnight. Some have told me water was OK, in fact desired to avoid dehydration (which may make it harder to find a vein???). I've also heard black coffee is OK but others say no.
So, if they mean 12 hours then do what they say - they may be checking for something else too. Drink as much water up until the last minute so you don't get dehydrated.

Only water...
Usually tea has zero calories, zero carbohydrates, but just in case just drink water.. you never know if the tea has some sugar added or carbohydrates, just play it safe and drink water.
This isn't a test being done at a doctor's office, it's offered thru the local YMCA (at a low cost), done by a nurse-practicioner. A friend of mine had this done a few weeks ago & she recommended it to me. I'm a female in my mid-50s, about 15-20 lbs over my ideal weight but very active w/ exercising 5 days a week. Don't have any chronic health problems, don't take any medications on a regular basis (which seems to astonish most people-- I guess you're supposed to have all these prescriptions once you're over 45 or 50 years of age?)
So I have no reason to suspect I have high cholesterol or diabetes, just think it's a good idea to get this test done. But a littled concerned about the fasting-- I never skip breakfast, always eat something in the morning. If I don't eat anything, I feel kinda weak, have no energy. When I play tennis in the morning, have to eat 90 minutes - 2 hrs before exercising, usually 250-300 calories. So I'm hoping it's OK tomorrow morning to drink hot plain tea (for the caffeine! I'm not a coffee drinker.) It's just Lipton black tea, no calories, no sweeteners, no carbs.
