Has anyone had to have surgery removing the side area of the great toenail? I did...BUT! It keeps starting to grow back....soo... I surgically remove it....myself!
No biggie, just soak it and its all good. Now, the nail is growing out, from the nailbed, and it looks like it is eather going to come off, or the top layer is going to peel off.
I can only attribute this to trauma of the nail.
Anyone else with any exp of this?
My mom had both great toe nails removed and they came back...this is not supposed to happen...so they say...
From my experience toenails do grow back after you lose one. I do a lot of running/biking/backpacking, etc. and have lost toenails many times. Just a few months ago three toenails fell off after a backpacking trip, and they did grow back. It takes a while, and they look weird for a bit, but they will fix themselves. Keep it clean, keep it covered, and you will be fine.
I have had two family members that had cronic ingrown toe nail issues with their big toes - and they had surgery to take care of them just as described directly above. One actually had a laser used - and fyi although it worked on the first try, it really altered the look of the toenails significantly/permanently. The other was just a scalpel with chemical applied, and the nail is now more narrow but otherwise looks fine (fyi - the surgery was done twice - the first time it did grow back).
I have the same obviously genetic issue - but figured out a way to deal with it without surgery. I allow the ingrown nail section to remain and just keep it tucked in under the rest of the nail (yes it may have been trauma that caused this and not genetics, but whatever the case the ingrown section of the nail, just a sliver, literally grows separately from the rest of the nail). As long as I don't cut my toe nail and ingrown section too short and also keep clean, there are no problems at all.

Hmm.... I hate to go back a second time... the pain was not all that bad, but my healing time takes longer since I am on Methotrexate for my RA...
I had both my big toes done because I would get ingrown nails and they would hurt so bad. One I had to have done 2 times and the other one on one side of the nail keeps growing back.
I don't have the type of insurance I used to have so I will just leave it unless it really starts hurting. When I get pedicures the lady just cuts it away. But I would do these surgeries over again in a heart beat. Even with the one side that grew back, it still isn't as painful as it was before the surgery.
i had 5 operations on my big toes for ingrown nails, the doctor said they roots were crooked, after the 4th time, we found a specialist, took out the entire side of both nails. The problem I have..and my sister that had the same thing done was that the nail wont grow over the end of my toe like it should, it doesnt bother me, but it sure bothers my sister.
In my 20's I had recurrent ingrown toe nail infections on both feet, very painful. After going to a podiatrist and trying for months to clear them up, I had surgery on both big toes to permanently remove the sides of the nails. After that surgery one of my toes got even more infected and worse. I had that nail totally removed. Since it was sugically done (the nail grows below where you can see) that toenail has never come back. So one toe has no nail and it never grew back at all. The other had the sides removed and for the most part has stayed infection free. I have maybe had 4 short-term infections since the surgery, which was done like 26 years ago.
I have to call the office all the time and and sch things for patients and I let the nurse know to let the dr know I am doing 'home surgery'
hmm, not good he says, frowning.
I'd say so.
It is less painful than when he does it though...eeeeek I may have to do it one day, though.... but for now, i will do it this way....ugh
hes probably just frowning because when you do it, he dont get a check Ive become a great "home surgeon" since Ive had ingrown toenails since I was 4.
