Here is the beginning of a recent article published in the Los Angeles Times, a reputable American newspaper:

"Alzheimer’s, the brain disease that saps away not just memories but, gradually, identity, is now a little less mysterious. In two large studies of more than 54,000 people, scientists have found five new genes linked to the disease. Think of the genes as clues to the underlying causes of Alzheimer’s. Those causes are still unknown, but scientists have long suspected they involve tangled strands of protein and protein plaque in the brain. Some of the most recently discovered genes add evidence that cholesterol plays a role in the disease, others that inflammation of the brain is an important player.

In one study, a large U.S. team -- led by geneticist Gerard Schellenberg at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine -- identified four additional genes that each add risk to eventually developing Alzheimer’s.
In the second study, led by scientists in Europe, researchers helped confirm those findings and added a fifth gene to the new roster." (complete article Genes Linked To Alzheimer's | Five more genes linked to Alzheimer's are discovered - Los Angeles Times)

Doesn't say anything about beer. The most comprehensive studies I've read all seem to agree that high cholesterol is the only somewhat controllable, non-genetic factor to date absolutely linked to the propensity to get Alzheimer's.

I personally know three people with early onset Alzheimers. One was, indeed, a beer-drinking alcoholic. The other two never drank at all to my knowledge. I'm no big fan of beer, but if I was, I wouldn't stop drinking it for fear of getting Alzheimer's.

I read about this once before while sitting in the outdoor patio of the local micro-brewery, but I can't remember the name of the publication where I saw the article. It must be true!

My grandmother, as well as a friends also suffered from this. Neither drank beer at all. There are many factors involved, including genetic makeup and pollutants, both natural and chemical that may play a role as well. This disease has many facets, a lot of it not fully understood. this can also be hereditary, meaning MY chances of developing it could be increased. Or not.

As far as a scare involving a much beloved beverage the world over there is one word: Moderation. Some beers every now and then are not likely to cause this. Moderation in anything is key. I think stress over worrying about potential findings in things we consume can be harmful as well. Except maybe tobacco smoke..that has no benefits for health at all. there have been studies touting the benefits of alcohol in moderation....

Enjoy life, and take care of yourself the best you can...

This looks closer to the truth than anything. My mother is clearly getting Alzheimer's and probably has had three beers in her life, doesn't eat processed foods and is in great shape. Her parents and sisters didn't have it, either, though.
