Hi everyone!! For the last couple of days I have been getting sharp stabbing pains on the top left side of my head. Usually last around 5 to 10 seconds and that's it. Afterwards, my head is sore to touch in that area and I feel really tired. Have also noticed that for about a week now my left eye lid has been twitching like crazy. I have not been having any headaches either before or after the sharp pains, and really don't feel sick. I don't have high blood pressure and the only meds I take is Meloxicam and a vitamin . I read something online about it might be a ice pick headache?? That is something I have never heard of. We are away from home on a business trip so hoping I can hold out till we get home in another week. Does anyone else have these sharp pains? If you do..what are you taking or doing differently? Thanks everyone!!

you really need to be checked out by a doctor - especially if this continues for more than a week.

it could be something very mild such as a tension headache, or it could be something more serious such as temporal arteritis. its impossible to say without a proper history, examination, and possibly some investigations.

i would advise you to get checked out - and in the meantime stay off excessive caffeine.

I've had similar headaches like that for 25 years. A sharp stabbing pain which can almost make you drop to the floor, lasting only seconds. The only thing I can tell you is over the years I have spoken to doctors about it and they have all told me stress. Not one took it any further which amazed me. They are very scary. I could go for a few months without one, but no longer. Then they would come in swarms. Sometimes I would get 8 in a day and then none for months.

There have only been 2 times they have stopped for years. Both times I had quit smoking. Yep. I quit years ago and started smoking again and along came those stabbing pains again. Then 4 years ago I quit again and have not had one since. So for me, there was some correlation. I never had any other symptoms.

I would talk to your doctor about it. What you are experiencing may not be the same as what I experienced. But if you smoke, quit.

There is a type of migraine called a cluster headache. Look it up and see if your symptoms fit. You may want to follow up with your MD. I would.

I was having a similar problem but it was directly above one eyebrow. I thought is was sinus congestion. I happened to go in for an eye exam (first one in four years) and the eye below the painful area had gotten a lot weaker. I was needing glasses to watch TV. Got the glasses and the weird one-sided pain went away. Good luck with yours!

I have these type of headaches as well... I found out what caused them when i went to see a chiropractor one day... lo and behold as he was massaging my shoulders - right near the shoulder blade he hit a nerve that caused my headache. It was instantaneous..

The sharp stabbing pain is in the same location you describe and the nerve is uner the left shoulder blade - or around that area.

But do see a dorctor about it.

Hi there, I too suffered from these so called Ice pick headaches, off and on, only for about 6 months or so I would say, I would of been about 26 or 27 years old, they came with no warning, out of the blue, light a lightening bolt to ya brain, then gone in 5 seconds, very sharp almost burning pain, I went to my doctors and she made me perform some tasks which she said if i had a tumour or something was seriously wrong, then I wouldn't be able to perform them correctly, anyway, not convinced, I paid nearly £400 to have a brain scan at a private clinic, I was so worried and it caused me great anxiety when I had an attack, The clinic said everything looked fine, no probs, I was on the pill and had been since being 16, My doctor decided to change my pill, anyway due to problems I ended up changing pills about 4 times in 6 weeks, one gave me constant headache, one i continually bled on, ect ect, settled on one and stayed on that, about 6 months later, I developed a blood clot in my left lower leg, (dvt), I was treated with 2 weeks of heparin injections and 3 months warfarin, I can honestly say, Iv'e not had an ice pick headache again since, Thank god! Not sure if there is any connection, but thought I would post my experience of it!

Quinine will stop the eye twitch. Drink some tonic water for a few days until the twitching stops. My opthamologistic recommended this and it never fails.
