A major accumulation of fluid in my legs over the last 6 months has prompted my endocrinologist to prescribe a diuretic called Furosemide 20mg, the stuff really works as after one pill i can see a visible difference in the swelling in my legs, side effects so far is some muscle cramping in hands and feet and frequent urination, pharmacist sold me a bottle of potassium pills to combat the cramping, so far i'm impressed with this product.
Anyone else familiar with water pills/diuretics?
My mom used to have to take them, but yeah it was a slippery slope. You have to take potassium to combat the effects of the diuretic, then you have to take sodium to coordinate efficiently with the potassium, then you have to take blood pressure medicine to combat the effects of the sodium. Or maybe it was the other way around - the blood pressure meds started it, then the diuretic became necessary, then the potassium, then the sodium. Or something like that.
There was a rather unpleasant part of "diet history" in the USA when it was fashionable for kids to take a combination of speed and diuretics to lose weight fast. In fact - a strong cup of coffee acts as a combination speed and diuretic. As does Red Bull. You end up dehydrated, even though you're drinking, because it is flushing all the water out of you. But you don't feel tired because the caffeine is keeping you pumped up. Very dangerous combination if you make a habit of it.
What was causing the accumulation of fluid? Has that been addressed yet or is it at least a work in progress?
