Was your grandmother from the South? I think she was saying wen.
I have bumps on my scalp, too, but I've never had one get that big, or that hurt. Hopefully someone else will know more.

I don't know if I had the same thing, are they hard or soft?

I had 3 hard lumps in my scalp, from about the time I was 14. I kept asking doctors about them, they said oh, they are just fat cysts, don't worry abut them.

Well, one day, I was about 26, I woke up with my scalp feeling like it was on fire. those little bumps were inflammed, pink-red, and stood up like horns! If we lived in the middle ages, i probably would have been burned at the stake as a witch!

I went to a dermatologist, he said they were cysts that had gotten infected. he said circulation around the cysts is poor, the risk of infection seeding in them is great. he injected them with antibiotics and cortisone, then put me on a 4-week course of antibiotics. then, once the infection was gone, he removed the cysts. By then, I had 2 bald spots about the size of a quarter right on top of my head. He said the hair roots were destroyed by the infection and would never re-grow, but he was able to stitch a flap over to conceal the bald spot. You'd never know now I had such a problem.

I feel such cysts, wens, whatever they are called, should be removed before they cause a problem. If an infection settles in, you might not be so lucky as I was to be able to catch it in time. According to the doc, the infection could have spread throughout my scalp, leaving me bald! I was fortunate at the time to get to a good doctor before the infection spread, and most fortunate to have insurance.

If you have such bumps, either get them removed now while not a problem, or at least keep a close eye on them if they do become inflammed.

My mom has one on the back of her head and that's what she calls it. It's some kind of fatty cyst.
