From all reports I have been reading, Kara Kennedy died of heart failure brought on as a side effect of her Chemo-therapy.

I know that it is considered very alternative.....but, perhaps she and many others could have led a healthier life for as long as she/they lived without the toxic/damaging effects of conventional treatment.

Myself personally, I would think very hard before I would undergo chemo if I was faced with that choice. Maybe I would not survive longer than if I did have the chemo......but, wow.....seems like a lot who undergo chemo really die from the treatment or at least really lose a lot of quality of life.

Here is an possible alternative:

Since early 2007, Dr. Melanie Schmidt and biologist Ulrike Kämmerer, both
at the Würzburg hospital, have been enrolling cancer patients in a Phase I clinical study of a most unexpected medication: fat. Their trial puts patients on a so-called ketogenic diet, which eliminates almost all carbohydrates, including sugar, and provides energy only from high-quality plant oils, such as hempseed and linseed oil, and protein from soy and animal products.

You are not entirely correct.

Yes, she had chemo because of cancer (lung, I think) And then instead of taking it easy until she regained her health, she started "working out." She died at a gym after a workout that was simple too much for her weaken heart and body.

Was her death her bad choice of activity? Or a side effect of Chemo?

And Steve Jobs............RIP.

Chemo is something that MAY prolong life. But.........wow, it really looked like it greatly weakened Jobs. I think that he did not have anything to lose by trying the Keto Diet.

Yeah, but what do you do when the chemo is not working???

Or worse yet........it is not working and it is also making you sicker and sicker.........how do you fight for your life in this state???? That is what happened to jobs. Once you get to that point, what do you have to lose by trying a different approach.

Jobs himself said he was sorry he had delayed conventional treatment, that it may have cost him his life; widely reported after his death.

He was also following some wacko diet.....I think Ornish. Probably weakened him more than the Chemo.

my cousin just died this past week. Was diagnosed with Pancreatic cancer in August. Had 2 chemo treatments and ended up in the hospital 5x due to chemo side effects. Died from the chemo-not the cancer. Although the cancer would have killed her at some point, I saw no good reason to ever have begun the treatment for that type cancer. Quality of life over quantity in some cases--Pancreatic cancer particularly.

I understand his cancer was actually accidentally discovered and in a very early stage when he underwent testing for something totally unrelated. He was told there was a 95% chance of curing it with surgery at that point.

Just goes to show that even very smart people have a problem with denial of bad medical news.

My older son is healthy today thanks to chemo. It was hard, but it cured his leukemia. He was on chemo for three years.

The Ornish diet is not really that wacko. IT's a low fat diet, but includes all the nutrients. We'll have to see if the high fat diet/cancer connection pans out.

If so, cancer patients should do Atkins, not Ornish. My concern would be that the appetite suppressant effect of ketosis would make it hard for a cancer patient to eat enough to prevent weight loss, and cancer patients tend to have poor appetites anyway.

But I would not use just diet alone and skip treatment with a proven track record.

It is very hard sometimes for people to decide to forgo treatment, even when the prognosis is very poor. Often it is pressure from family --- who do not wish to lose a loved one.

With pancreatic cancer, the average life expectancy is 4 to 6 months.

Great post.........you made the point I was TRYING to get across much better than me.

If you have a cancer diagnosis that is most likely terminal.....even with chemo.......well, myself personally............I would try something else. For me, I think I would try a very strict Ketogenic diet.

Chemo is very hard on the body, at least that is my impression from what little I have read.
