I saw a comedian that made me think...Hmmm? due to his schtick about Jerry Lewis having a $Million dollar entourage, and that have been NO KIDS CURED of Muscular Dystrophy in how many years? How can he sing that song "you'll never walk alone"....as the grand finale? when these victims ARE NOT WALKING AT ALL!? Nobody has gotten out of their wheelchairs yet, after all the years he's been taking in OVER A BILLION DOLLARS.
What is being done in the research of this horrible disease? I almost tend to agree with this cynical point of view on 'charity' ...I wanna help, but how do you bypass the "CEO, staff" eating up the funds you are donating? ANYBODY ELSE THINKING IN THIS REALM?
Inquiring minds wanna know?

I have often wondered just how much he rakes off the top of any money collected.
It's not just Jerry, it's anyone that "lends" his or her name to a fund raising endeavor.

According to Wikipedia, Jerry Lewis has actually done quite a bit of good for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

When I want to check out how well a charity is run, I always go to the
Charity Navigator
This site evaluates charities according to efficiency, responsibility etc.

I agree with you Cil...and that Jerry Lewis gets an appearence or host fee to put on the show. Can you imagine the outrage if the public found out any of the entertainers were somehow skimming that. Also i'm sure the IRS and other agencies with Federal Indictments would bust then for fraud and be sent to federal prison.
I for one am glad that he's raised the incredible amount of money to fight more than 40 different neuromuscular diseases.....

It usually takes money to make money.
I think it is usual for big names to receive renumeration for promoting a charitable cause.
How much is by contract, and the public is not privey to this.
It can be just to cover expenses: hotel, travel, food for the person and his/her staff. It can amount to what the personallity could expect for a non-charitable event, though, and such a 'star' will get all the extra 'good works' publicity along with it, because people assume that they are getting nothing, donating their time as well as paying their own expenses.
So, some of these people are truly good-hearted and care and doing all that they can to help others, while others are just skimming profits from the poor and needy.

It is and always has been a concern I have about just how much $$ actually goes into the research and not into the pockets of way to much help?!! There is to much politics involved in many of these so-called charities. But personally I believe Jerry Lewis is for real and really does care and want to help. And infact progress has been made. Not as much or as fast as most of us would like but there is progress being made.

We have all heard stories about the American Cancer Society and how they really don't want to find a cure.
If you go to your doctors and read the magazines today, you might come away thinking that we have made great strides against this disease.
My doctor told me, no, in some cancers we seem to be going backwards. The only progress that we have made is against the slower growing cancers, which is not the majority of them.
I, too, knew a girl who worked for the American CAncer Association(or whatever they call themselves). She said everyone told her that she was working too hard, yup, they also said that if they all worked that hard, they might find a cure and work themselves right out of a job.
I would rather contribute to some charity that tried to get stiffer penalities for people who harm animals, or maybe to help those poor fellows who are wrongly convicted and finally get out, after years, on DNA evidnece.
In most European countries, the country is methodically doing DNA tests to see if any innocent people are behind bars. Here, it take lawyers and students volunteering their time and even though the guys are proven innocent the system does not want to give them up. Sometimes they refuse to overturn the conviction, even though they admit the guy is innocent. Most times there is no renumeration at all for the lost time, job, family, etc.
Makes you think that a lot of guys are framed in the good ol USofA.
I also believe in Law Enforcement Against Prohibitiion. They have a website. I, personally, think we have not solved our drug problems because too many people in authority are being paid off. I am for taking the profit out. LEAP is an organization of mostly ex-cops who want to legalize drugs, and cite many reasons why, although my main reason is not one of them.

I agree with that statement. You can also add the American Heart Association and the American Diabete's Association also....

Yes.
My husband and I are planning to move to Seattle.
We will look for a house of worship there.
I am thinking of calling them up and saying I need food, and if they are forthcoming, we will join that institution.
So many SAY they do good works, but when someone is really in need, how do they respond?
I was speaking, online, to someone who works for charities, and she says many do not really come through with what their propaganda says they do, as far as charitable works.
