Blood types are based on the proteins on the surface of cells (particularly red blood cells) in blood, and there are many of those. The article you linked says 32 proteins, but I thought I read somewhere that the number is in the hundreds to thousands. Because I believed there are so many proteins, and the established blood types group only a few of them, I have long believed that our blood typing systems do not categorize all blood types.

One thing for sure is that no matter how many different blood types the ABO blood type is probably the most important for blood transfusion.
