I'll just chime in and say I have had quite a few mystery medical problems..........some of them quiet serious.

One of them was Valley Fever.....sick as a dog with all of the classic symptoms. Went to the ole Gp..........she had clue ZERO......dismissive and a dolt too boot. Finally want to see Pulmonologist after x-rays(via a TB clinic) showed STUFF growing in my lungs. The specialist nailed it without missing a beat.

I have had similar experiences as the one above...........GPs being totally lost. The term Psychogenic was used a lot.

I have a decent knowledge of basic medicine and how the body works. I see no use in myself going to see a GP ever again.

Ok, maybe if I want to have Statins pushed on me....ok, then I will go.

As much as I hate greedy people, I've come to respect them, only en masse.
Greed, throughout history, has always proven to guarantee innovations, necessary changes. But, for many, unfortunately, it won't arrive soon enough.

I'm lucky to be born with teflon-coated genes, have only used my health insurance once in the last 3 years (I'm 62), for a growth on my face which I thought was cancerous, which it wasn't. Hadn't seen an American Dr., in years, and I had to see my primary Dr. first before seeing the dermotologist to remove the wart, I was only in her office 10 minutes, and in that time she had prescriped 3 medications for me, and, at the pharmacy, found out I couldn't afford them, never bought them!

I also work in a Long-term care/Rehab facility, and don't get me going on being stumped by our Medical Profession!

Think the doctors make the bucks on those that have managed health care issues on long-term basis - cancer, diabetes, thyroid, high blood pressure, etc., because we have to keep coming back every 6 months [on average]. If you have two or more medical conditions, your meds don't always run out at the same time. So, you have to come back to get a new prescription written after you've run out of the refills. Two separate co-pays. Darn, need to synch my pills so that they run out the same time.

I usually call the docs office for the refills - they call it in to the pharmacy - so I don't even have to go in (especially now that I'm unemployed and don't have insurance).

Here's my story:
About 15 years ago I noticed that I couldn't feel the right side of my skin above the knee - went to my doctor - he sent me for an mri (had 3 done eventually), didn't check the area I was worried about at all.
Found out I had spinal stenosis, ostearthritis. He sent me to several orthopedic md's, physical therapy, tons of different pain meds (all of which had side effects so I had to stop taking them). Also 15 years ago he put me on high-blood pressure and cholesterol meds - since I also seemed to have high blood pressure? A few years later I noticed I couldn't feel some of my toes in my left foot ... told my doctor about it - no reaction from him ..... told him I was having problems sleeping (sometimes not sleeping for over 36 hours or more) ... he prescribed sleeping pills - which again I stopped taking because of the side effects .... not sure when he prescribed the vicodin or for what but I 'found' my sleeping pill finally - and it's only $4!. I take it now when I want to sleep - knocks me right out - no side effects. Two years ago I went in because my sinuses were 'blocked' - he sent me to a specialist .... didn't find anything? and gave me some steroids and antibiotics. With the steroids I gained weight (which I still can't seem to reduce) ... my heart was working harder now that I was even fatter - so my docotor prescribed beta blockers ... which I finally stopped taking about a month ago because of the side effects (more weight gain - lethargy - great combination trying to lose weight). Also about two years ago my doctor decided that I needed an inhaler/nebulizer or whatever - he gave me freebies and a prescripiton - I have been making it last for as long as I can - because I can't afford to pay the 187 for one of them. It is now 2012 - the numbness on the right side of my knee is still there (sometimes it hurts) ..all my toes in my left foot are numb now and some in my right foot. My back hurts all the time .... all my joints hurt and throb. My sinuses are still blocked - can't breathe - one of the comments the doctor gave me was can't you breathe thru your mouth?
I've been unemployed for about 3 months now - my blood pressure is 117/74!
The stress at work gave me the high blood pressure! The stress kept me awake! I don't know if I should stop taking the high-blood pressure meds - can't go to the doctor - have no money (he charges about 175 for a 'visit').
I've been going to this 'doctor' since 1983 ... he doesn't even know my name.

Also - the best advise I ever got was not from a doctor - but from someone at the local vitamin cottage (colorado) ... was having problems with bowel movement (I know - nasty subject) ... and the woman at the store suggested taking acidophillus and some phsyllium (two tablespoons in a large glass of water or juice) each day (about $7 for container - last about two months) ..... that was over ten years ago - and it has never failed me when I took it. (I noticed right away when I skipped this - had lots of problems).

Right, you have 3 refills that you call in but after that you
have to make an appt to be seen by docs (every 6mos), at
least where I go anyways.

yes, I've heard of this many times, it's a lot of wasted money, have a neighbor who had to do the same. When he gets the shot, it's great for a few months, however, his new insurance company made him go to theropy first, and it made him so much worse, he was loosing sleep due to the pain and numbness....??????
