I know nothing about this topic, but I need to know what's out there these days? What are most women using?
I do NOT want to get on the pill...too many side effects. I don't want something that's too much trouble to use or too much of a hassle. I don't want something that will prevent pregnancy for longer than a year because I'm in my late 30s as it is & just might want to have a child in a year or two.
Tell me everything you can, your experiences, your female friends' experiences, etc.
I was on the pill for 25 years and had to quit because at 35 I was a smoker. Never had any of those side effects they speak of but it did help with my painful cramping. Of course, you have to remember to take it every single day.
I also once got some injection that lasted 3 months at a time I believe. I only did this once or twice so don't remember much about it but I think they may have found something wrong with it. I loved this alternative; it stopped my period altogether.
I was 35 over 15 years ago so I haven't kept up with the word on this stuff.
We used condoms properly and I had a child. We used a diaphragm with spermacide properly and I had a child. Next step, hysterectomy for other issues. No more children. But most women I know who are younger are on the pill. You are however approaching the age where it becomes riskier in terms of stroke. I wish I had better advice than no condoms or diaphragms but I don't.
I've done the patch and the pill. I like the pill better. But since you don't want the pill I'd consider talking to your doctor about an IUD. Or maybe the ring?
I had the three month injection...it's called Depo Provera. I bled very heavily nonstop for the three months until it was out of my system.
I don't think the injection would be good if you might want a child in a year, I think it can last longer than the three months sometimes.
You should talk to your doctor about your options. I think the pill has gotten a lot better in terms of side effects, and there are supposed to be some health benefits from using it also, it helps reduce the risk of some kinds of cancers.
You're looking for the "best" but your expectations aren't realistic. The best foolproof temporary un-messy method of birth control is abstinence.
Everything else is either not foolproof, or messy, or long-term, or the Pill, which you've already ruled out.
I agree, if the OP wants something that's hassle free..then abstinence is the answer and we here can't decide for someone else what will work for them. The OP needs to talk to her doctor and learn all of her options along with risks and side effects.
In my experience, as long as you have a mature and responsible partner...condoms!
I've used the pill in the past and it killed my libido - but it worked.
My mother and my sister both had AWFUL side effects from the shot.
If I needed birth control at this point, I would strongly consider a non-hormonal IUD. I hear really good things about IUDs.
