Appropriate care - ER's should only be used for emergency care. If it is not an urgent, or emergent condition, she'd be taking up the ER staff's time when they can be treating true emergencies. When ERs are used inappropriately, people can die. Houston has only two Level 1 trauma centers. When they have to go on stand-by -- that means ambulances are turned away -- that's really bad news for you if you're in a bad car accident, or you think your dad is experiencing a stroke, or if your child is having an anaphylactic reaction to an insect bite... emergencies can happen anytime, and they're usually unexpected. You want access to the ER when that happens.
Cost - an ER visit is extremely costly. Yes, they will see you, but you WILL be billed. If you don't pay, or can't pay, they will work out a payment plan. If you are still having trouble paying, your bill may be sent to a collection agency. You WILL be hassled.
Long-term care - Alisha89 really needs a medical home -- someplace where the docs know her, where her records are maintained, and her health is tracked. Community health centers fulfill that role beautifully, and are vitally important resource to maintain our community's health.
