When I was on chemo, I was in my oncologist's office for every cold because I would typically need fluids and they would often give me IV antibiotics because of my compromised immune system. Because I worked full time during chemo, even a little cough opened up my body to a whole lot of germs from the raw lungs and throat, so it was important to knock it out or else it could easily become much more serious.
I still get colds about 5 times a year and it almost always moves into my lungs and turns into bronchitis due to my lung damage. I'm dealing with that right now - lungs irritated from secondhand smoke turned into a cold which turned into bronchitis. I only got to the doctor now if I'm running a fever (and about half of my colds develop fevers).
Before getting cancer, I never went to the doctor for colds or flus. I'd just neti pot the crap out of my nose, maybe take some decongestant to relieve sinus pressure, and make lots of tea and chicken soup. No need to go to the doctor for the vast majority of people.
No. I am sick now but as long as my discharge is clear there is no reason to go to the doctor. I don't get sick as much as I did when I smoked or as much as I did when I lived in Chicago.
As a doctor once told me: "A common cold will go away in one week with proper medication and in 7 days without."
WOW! you had a smart doctor!...I only go to the Docs when I know it's a matter of saving a limb, or needing antibiotics...HedgeHog_Mom...your sister has confused spending money with being proactive....totally unnecessary most times.
If your sister is "managing" her healthcare like that NOW, I can't imagine how many times she'll be going to a doctor when she's 80. My mother has been seen by 11 "specialists" in the past five years and she's considered to be in excellent health for 86.

Going to the doctor when you are that old is mostly a waste of time. Human life is artificially extended far too much these days. No wonder the planet is running out of resources.
No. I usually wait until something turns into bronchitis or pneumonia or some sort of infection. I'm a "do nothing and hope it goes away" type and that usually works out well. When I go to the Dr's I know I need an Rx.
I remember once when my DD was in college and she had been sick for a long time, 2 months, but had so much to do and didn't have a Dr in the area. She got desperate and went to a local health clinic only to be diagnosed with bronchitis, sinusitius and and strep. Sometimes it pays to be proactive.
