I have Glaucoma and I should stop drinking coffee?
News, I know, no one wants to hear this -- especially the day after we went around the world in coffee shops -- but a 120,000-person study has tied drinking three cups per day to developing exfoliation glaucoma.
I have high pressure in my eyes & I asked my eye specialist about coffee since I drink a cup everyday. He said one cup shouldn't make any difference. But still I am thinking of giving up coffee until my next eye exam to see if there's any difference in pressure. I am myopic & mostly people with short eye sight (myopia) are at risk of developing glaucoma. Also, maintaining a healthy weight makes a difference.
Wasn't it just last year coffee was supposed to be good for us? These scientists really need to make up their minds.. or we could just ignore all the mumbo jumbo and enjoy life.
If someone has elevated pressure in their eyes, this would be something to ask their doctor about. For everyone else, other studies have shown benefits to coffee, for helping prevent skin cancer, alzheimers, and other conditions. Also you have to take these kinds of studies with a grain of salt as sometimes later studies reach different conclusions. I do think it's good to be aware of these things though.
When I drink a lot of coffee(more than 3 cups) I get visual migraines.
