Yesterday, my BF started having this bad back pain between his left shoulder blade & spine below his neck. He slept horribly & he woke up this morning feeling even worse. He doesn't have back problems, so we're puzzled as to what brought this on. He just took one Aleve tablet about 10 min ago.
Does anyone know what he can do here? He's takes thyroid medication too...Levoxyl. When Target opens, I'm probabyl going to to get some Icy Hot patches & maybe something else too.
Sounds like the old-fashioned "crick in the neck". It may be that he has slightly injured one of the disks in his neck - the upper part of the spinal column - and the shoulder pain is being referred from that, as a nerve is impacted. Best treatment is to find a comfortable position and stay with it, using moist heat and anti-inflammants such as ibuprofen. A hot shower with water trained on the back of his neck may help, too. Usually this sort of thing subsides in a day or three.
Have him stretch out on the couch or recliner, keep the remote and reading matter handy, use pillows to help support his neck, use moist heat (much better than dry heat), and encourage him to be patient while waiting this out. Not fun, but it won't last too long, I expect.
However...if it does continue past three days, worsens, or begins to affect his ability to use his arm or move his neck, get medical help asap.
Hope this helps - maybe you can fix him a turkey sandwich and have him watch T'day football as a distraction.
Thanks for taking the time to post here on TG morning! I appreciate it. We went to CVS & got those Icy Hot Patches & ibuprofen (Advil).
