Yes. They do. Use your techie computer to research the numbers of people working out compared to 40 years ago.

"Outdated" as in working out doesn't provide health benefits anymore similar to VHS players not providing top quality video presentations due to DVDs?

(I once had a boss who explained to me that the amount of time working out was longer than the increase in longevity he would receive by working out.)

My dad never exercised a day in his life and he is still alive and is only a couple years away from out living Jack La Lane.

Kind of think you are half-joking w/this thread

People work out today probably more than any time in history - why you ask? Most people I know do it b/c they want to look good, and as the saying goes, 'look good, feel good.'

I personally run, bike, walk, do pushups, etc. b/c I just feel better physically, mentally and emotionally in general when I do those things than when I don't. Moreso, I don't want to get fat and have a big old gut by the time I'm 40 or 50. It also allows me to eat more things that I enjoy while maintaining my weight.

Do people go overboard? Sure, and I don't look at it as by running say 6 miles today that it will add 2 days to my life. Heck, I could get hit by some idiot driver while I'm running and that would be the end for me. I look at it more like when I hopefully make it to 70, 80 or 85, that I will feel better/be healthier than the person who was a couch potato in their 20s and 30s and now has heart problems, swelling, bad joints, diabetic, etc. by the time they hit their 60s, 70s or 80s.

Sounds to me like a thread designed solely to get people riled up. It is analagous to asking why lots of people struggle to quit smoking. It is obvious why people work out to anyone who hasn't been living in a cave for the past 30 years.

However, tech has helped us exercise. The Wii games can call for quite a bit of work, like the bowling and tennis games.

Yep, I do I went to the gym earlier tonight and did a stretch class and weight class. I was too tired to do any treadmills or cycling classes (which I normally do). I did walk my dog for the 2nd time when I got home

Of course not.

Robots come in while I sleep and move my arms and legs for me. I'm totally ripped.

I work out six days a week. I've had seven children and am in the best shape of my life. Part of the reason I work out is because I work sitting at a computer all day.

Judging by the number of successful gyms and fitness studios in the area, I'd say - lots of people still work out. In fact, more than ever before.

Why? Um - because movement is an important part of human physiology? Just a guess. I know if I lay in bed all day after a full night sleeping, I'm pretty stiff when I try to get OUT of bed. And since I have to get up to go to the bathroom once in awhile, it's in my best interest to get up and move around from time to time. Though I suppose I could get catheterized. That'd solve the problem. But who's going to change my catheter for me, if I can't move, and no one else gets any exercise either? You think the Borg will come to my rescue?
