If AIDS people get to take antiviral medications all the time, why can't I get some of their good stuff when I get sick by no fault of my own? Does it work for cold and flu viruses?
Drugs like AZT and related would cause dangerous side effects. this not like popping random antibiotics it's a heavy potent drug. Fluids, Chicken soup and rest.
Oh, wow, scary stuff then. AIDS folks are always saying it's no big deal to catch their disease. If the turn-of-the-century advanced pills they take don't make them immune to the cold or flu, and also have nasty side effects on top of that, I'd have to disagree with their positivity.

It almost seems like you think people who have AIDS have somehow asked for it. I'm sure nobody wants to take meds like that for the rest of their life. And even with the meds, people with AIDS will still likely have a shortened lifespan.

You haven't seen the trending passiveness towards the AIDS? I'll try to keep on topic: nobody told me of the nasty side effects of AIDS pills when they cite AIDS people "live longer and maintain healthy lifestyles just like the uninfected because of advances in antivirals." So I learn today, from you guys (thanks) you can still get viruses on daily antivirals, and be sick (from the drugs) if you have AIDS.
There are many families of viruses, and influenza viruses are completely different than HIV. HIV is caused by a retrovirus and flu viruses are in an unrelated family, the Orthomyxoviridae. Antiviral drugs are very specifically targeted to the type of virus they're intended for, so they don't work for other kinds.
I'm HIV positive and take ARV's and the side effects are minimal for me. Like any medication side effects impact people in different ways but the latest generation of ARV's do not have as potent sides as earlier one's for most people. Is this to say getting HIV is no big deal. Whoever says that is foolish as it is a chronic but manageable disease for those who are diagnosed and treated early. AIDS happens when one's immune system is compromised by HIV over time, mainly because the individual was not detected early and was not treated in a timely manner. This is why testing and treatment are crucial. It is very much a possibility that I will never acquire AIDS and will die of other causes everyone else does. I've been on ARV's for 2 years and my immune system is as strong as one who is HIV negative. The only reminder I have that i'm positive is the fact that I have to pop a pill every night and see my doctor for routine bloodwork every 3 months.
Aside from that I work a stressful job, travel all over the world and eat whatever I want but don't over eat. If you saw me you'd have no clue i'm positive and look 10 years younger than my 37 years.

The shorter lifespan is not so clear cut! There are a variety of lifestyle factors that impact life expectancy not just for HIV positive people but those who are negative. For those who are positive, If you are treated early and maintain a healthy lifestyle life expectancy does not have to be shortened much at all for HIV positive individuals. Indeed in some cases, because of constant medical scrutiny, it is possible we can outlive our HIV negative peers. For those who are negative, smoke and eat like crap expect a lower life expectancy on average as well!
