Interesting article. The clothing sizes are so out of whack. Years ago size 12 was the ideal women's dress size...a standard for models. Now size 12 is considered a "large". I weigh 137 pounds and am 5'10" and wear a size six but have to have the waist taken in. By the old sizing standards I am probably more like a 14.....all this tinkering with clothing sizes is supposed to make us feel better about getting collectively larger.
This is so interesting. I have been losing a couple pounds lately but find that my hips and waist have gotten bigger. Its like everything is going south.

LOL - I think many of our hips and waists are on the same road trip
I just have a small waist in comparison to my top and bottom - a true hourglass figure....if clothes fit in the hips, they are almost always too big in the waist.
While a worse diet and a more sedentary lifestyle have influences and also while proactive fitness has an influence (these things were probably less 60 years ago), another thing that may have an influence is immigration. Imagine if 50 million Japanese people immigrated to the US. Japanese are slightly smaller than Americans in general. If there was a huge influx of Japanese, that would mean the "average" American size would go down everything else being equal.
People are getting bigger but it isn't just flab. Kids seem to be getting taller than their parents. I've seen lots of tall, lanky kids with big, big feet...and often their parents are of average or below average height/stature. Those kids might wear bigger sizes than their parents did, but it isn't because they are fat...
