Hi everyone!

Hope this is the right place for this. I want to open up a birthing / community center. I was wondering if any of you have experience with this. I am in the process of becoming a NP with a midwife / family care specialty, and envision a place in a rural community ( not sure where, I'd like suggestions on that, too!) that offers a variety of classes, everything from labor to parenting to nutrition to self defense. I'd like to offer a clothes exchange and hold community events there. ie fall and spring festivals, etc.

Have any of you done anything close to this or worked somewhere like this? i have the vision, but I'm a little lost on actually getting it off the ground.

Thank you so much!
Mindy

I think it sounds like a wonderful idea! Far too few areas of this country have a birthing center as an alternative to hospital birth, and you would be doing a valuable service to the community.

You might also have some luck posting on the Mothering.com message boards if you don't already go there. The women there are very natural birth-minded and would probably have some great suggestions for you.

Lots of luck!

Thanks, Karen I will do that! I've been thinking about this for years now, but have just decided there is a great need for an alternative to the usual hospital birth. (lol, if any birth can be considered usual) I had my first three babies at home with a midwife and it was truly incredible. But with insurance, etc I think a birthing center would be a great alternative.

Wish me luck!

Sounds like a fantastic idea. A friend of mine worked somewhere like this in New Mexico, I think. You might want to google NARM or MANA, not really sure how much info will be useful to you, but should still be good sites.
