Well I hope skipping your period isn't dangerous.... I was on depo for years and never had a period.
And yeah, I was fine.

I know this can be done. I never approved of it because I had a girlfriend that constantly skipped her periods because she dated a guy who she only saw on the weekends. I told her she was going to ruin herself. She's still alive decades later. But I want to do it just once. I figure I've lived to almost 50 without doing it, so how much damage can it do to do it just once?
The problem is that I don't take birth control. Will it work if I get a prescription and start taking it now for a vacation that's just two weeks from now?
No. It wont' work. It takes two months or more for your body to get regulated on BC pills. I'm in the Pill and I do skip periods when I need to. I just start the new pack right after ending the old one. This was done under the advice of my doctor, of course.
Um, may I make a suggestion?
I am disinclined to use birth control to make my vacations better (and since all my vacations tend to be free diving/ocean type vacations, having my period is seriously not cool). Too many side effects/potential sequela.
What I do when I realize it's going to hit the same time as my trip is about 4 or 5 days prior to my period starting, I take an antiinflammatory (usually advil) once a day.
It never fails to shorten and lighten my period significantly.
I think it has to do with prostaglandin inhibition. It's a trick some obgyn residents taught me.
I just did it this month - my period went from 5 days to 3 days and was much lighter.
Because of the other risks of taking NSAIDS, I would not recommend doing this on any kind of regular basis, but once a year for a special trip is no biggie.
Aren't their BCP now that allow you to only have several periods a year? Like two or four? I'm past that age now, but I've seen ads for them and wished I'd had them when I was traveling in remote areas of South America and Africa doing field work when I was younger. I DID stay on my old-fashioned BCPs for two months in rural Peru once, with no problems, but I wouldn't recommend it unless the pill you are using is specifically formulated to do that on purpose.

Really? Ibuprofen thins my blood and makes my period heavier.
Maybe starting it 4 to 5 days earlier prevents that.

Yeah, it sounds like I needed to start them a few months ago. Coop's experience tells me that it wouldn't have been a good idea even then. I'd be one of the people who had complication. That's just the way things go for me----especially when it comes to women's issues.
