I've never heard of just having the stones taken out. I had my gall bladder taken out and have never noticed any difference at all, not a big deal. You're left with a slit or two on the side of your tummy--I can't even find mine anymore.
Gall stones are not like kidney stones, they don't zap them to remove them. If you are in pain, losing weight, and sick they will likely suggest you have your gallbladder removed, which is what I would also suggest.
I think your wife is confused. They're going to want to take your gallbladder out--you don't need it and there's no point in risking complications from scar tissue, etc, by cutting it open and sewing it back up. I had mine out a few years back. It was a piece of cake and I felt better right away. Can't even see the scars anymore.

Exactly - well said.
OP I hope you get the surgery this week so you can begin to feel better very soon
Suppose to talk with Surgion in the morning.Hard telling when they want to operate. brushrunner
Mine wasn't so urgent--I was in pain and nauseated 24/7, but no stones--so I was able to wait a few weeks until it could happen right after a work deadline. For a family member who had stones, they wanted to operate as soon as it could be scheduled. The risk of a stone getting into the bile duct is what can make it dangerous and turn a routine procedure into a more complicated one.
I had my gallbladder removed a number of years ago. The only problem I had for awhile was heartburn, and then one day I had a full-blown gallbladder attack. I had no gallstones, my gallbladder was diseased. They removed it and I have had no problems since.
Pain of the attacks were horrible, first one I thought was a heart attack as the pain was so high up my chest.. six months later had the gallbladder removed and two years on have never looked back. simple operation and easy to recover.. in fact sometimes I check to see if I really had something done. good luck..
