Say you stay awake for 36 hours in a row for whatever reason, how long would you probably sleep for when you do go to bed? And would you wake up feeling completely fresh?

8 hours most and feel great unless I was doing drugs to stay awake. Done it many times.

It varies.

Sometimes I can sleep a normal length of time and sometimes I sleep longer.

Sometimes I can't fall sleep at all because I was overtired.

Depends on your body clock and how much you normally sleep.

well when i was 21 or 22 years old stayed awake for 4 days drinking and living it up . PS the drugs helped I but do not do it .

Lets just say I got 24 hours of sleep after it was all said and done after the 4 days of being up.

now i get about 21 to 30 hours of sleep a week. When i have finals for the week i get 15 hours of sleep a week.

Thank god for amphetamine it helps get things done .

I have had a few times that I had to work all night and the next day, with dinner it would be closer to 40 hours, and usually would go to bed about 8pm and get up the next day at 5, so 9 hours. I would take another 2-3 days to get back caught up.

Ugh, that is rough. Occasionally I have to do that for work. For me, I would probably need a good 9-10 hours of sleep, maybe even a little more. And I'd still probably feel a little "off" for another day or so.

Recently I stayed awake 36 hours driving across country. Took me about 2 weeks to get back to normal 7hours straight sleeping.

Interesting. Do you think it makes any difference if you use caffeine or something else to stay awake? Meaning if you just use sheer willpower do you sleep better than if you used caffeine or drugs or whatever to stay awake?

If I am awake for 36 hours, the pattern seems to be something like:
5-7 hours, not very restful on day 1
8-9 hours, restful on day 2 (but feel off)
7-8 hours, normal sleep pattern on day 4 (but feel off)
9-10 hours on day 5, and hopefully I'll be back to normal.

For me, the biggest hurdle is the reason for the all nighter. I feel terrible these days on one of those. I need coffee, sugar and carbs to make it through the day. I end up having 3X my normal caffeine amount on those days.
