Which do you think is worse for your health-

Being 35% overweight

Based just on my experience, I'd say the coffin nails win the day. Obesity will definitely shorten your life and cause other health problems, but there are lot of older folks that are obese. But I've known lots of people that died very young, some just from heart attacks as a result of smoking.

Smoking definitely. Vasoconstricts vessels.

This to me seems like a question where someone is weighing being overweight against keeping the weight off by smoking cigarettes. Either way, the person is significantly increasing their chances of ill health so I wouldn't spend much time over thinking which habit, overeating versus smoking, is the most desirable.

My late husband asked that. His doc told him the over weight will kill him quickly, and the smoking in the long term

He died of a heart attack a few years later related to being over weight. I do think it would be different for everyone.

So you think everything else being equal they are precisely equally as harmful?

I gained 40 lbs when I quit smoking. My doctor said that the weight gain was safer than continuing to smoke would have been.

Both are bad, but I am guessing the smoking is worse, but what is even worse than that would be being 35% overweight and still smoking. We have a neighbor who is both. My grandma was about 100 lbs overweight and lived to be in her late 80s. My mother in law was overweight until in her 80s and died at 97. Neither of them had ever smoked.
