I purchased a new pillow top mattress in June of 2012. In January of 2013 I began to develop rashes on various parts of my body. I subsequently went to three different Dermatologists and was diagnosed with Spongiotic Dermatitis. I tried many prescription gels, lotions and creams. I did get temporary relief but needed to apply these products twice a day for relief. I was referred to an Allergist who did a patch test and the result was that I am allergic to nickel and formaldehyde. Would it benefit me to purchase a box spring and mattress enclosure to possibly eliminate the contact from the formaldehyde? I see some products on the internet for enclosures but don't want to waste the money if this doesn't work! Any comments would be appreciated!
Have you tried just using a good mattress pad? That would cover the top surface of your mattress with a waterproof layer that would be between your body and the mattress...if the rashes are caused by skin contact, then the top of the mattress is probably all you need to cover. The mattress pad can be washed in the washing machine, which also helps to get rid of dust and skin flakes that would otherwise end up in your mattress.
