All you have to do is look at the 7th Day Adventists. They are vegetarian by religion (one of the members' brothers actually started the Kellogg's cereal company in the 1800s). They typically have longer lives, hardly any type 2 diabaetes, and very low instances of "bad" cholesterol. A major study was done on this (12 years) and proved these findings.

The Oxford Vegetarian Study: an overview -- Appleby et al. 70 (3): 525S -- American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (http://www.ajcn.org/cgi/content/full/70/3/525S - broken link)

You can google for other evidence. Some people will tell you that our digestive systems are designed to eat meat because we have a couple of sharp teeth. It's simply not true. If we were designed to eat meat, we would have teeth like dogs, wolves, and other carnivores/omnivores and be able to eat mat raw without even cooking it. There is only one vitamin that comes solely animal sources (b12). Anything else you need you can get from vegeterian sources and much more efficiently. Most people think cows make calcium; it's not true. Cows have calcium in their body because of what they eat. If you eat what they eat, you get your calcium.

And yes, you have to know what you're doing to be a "healthy" vegetarian.

There are many cultural groups that don't believe in eating meat, and they are fine :-) It's not an unhealthly choice at all, as long as you make sure you get enough protein, etc.

You can also look at famous athletes/celebs. A vegan was Mr. Atlas (world), Martina Navaritola (sp?), Carl Lewis, so many more.

I'l give you one better than medical studies....I'll share my personal EXPERIENCE. I've been a vegetarian for 35 years, and I'm one of the healthiest 58 year olds that I know of. I don't care about the studies, or the naysayers. I'll put my personal experience above and beyond research or medical studies, any day of the week.

blessings....Franco

I was waiting for someone to say this so i thought i'd point some things out myself.

Along with the Vegetarrian Advenist are the long living Meat Eating Okinawans
that eat fish. Also the long living Meat Eating Sardinians that eat Veal and Milk.

Here's a comparison chart of OUR digestive tracts compared to Canines and Herbavores for the poster who said we have nothing in common with Canines.

Can you go and kill and cow with your teeth and eat it? I'd like to see that. Any true carnivore or omnivore can do this to their prey. Humans can't.

Uhhh history books ---> that way.

What do you think the early hunters and gatherers did, had their food served to them on a silver platter? They killed and ate their meat raw...until they discovered fire.

A reason for me to be a vegetarian, one amongst many reasons..., is that it is better for the environment...

There's that protein myth again, started by the meat industry long ago
