This happened to me for the first time this morning. I take the bus, and I was turning to sit in the seat and the bus took off and pop there went my knee. I have osteoarthrosis so I'm used to knee pain -but this hurt like hell. It went right back into place. I'm not sure if it was the pain or the shock of it -but I was almost in tears.

Now, almost 6 hours later, the pain is gone -but I have stiffness and slight pain around the knee and calf when I try to walk - and I'm not putting my full weight on it.

Has anybody else done this before and what were the long term results?

Knees do not have "sockets".

Sounds like you have an ACL problem.

Tearing of the anterior cruciate ligament occurs during sudden stops or changes in direction of travel - so you frequently hear of it associated with sports injuries, but the rest of us can injure the ACL too.

Immediately following an injury to the ACL your knee may swell, feel unstable and become too painful to bear weight. Many people hear or feel a "pop" in their knee when the injury occurs.

Unfortunately, this is not going to get better on its own or with elevation and time. You need to see an orthopedic doctor to get this treated. FYI, sometimes surgery is the best option for repair, sorry!

I don't have insurance- so I really can't just go to the doctor.

I don't have any swelling though, so I'm hoping that is a good thing

My knees have done that for years. Yea it hurts a lot. The stiffness you are dealing with is internal swelling due to the dislocation and you should be icing the knee 20 minutes on 20 off as many times a day as you can. I have had good success with having a chiropractor work on mine. While the joint does not actually have a socket the knee cap can and will move if you damage ligaments and the ligaments can become out of place. My chiro takes me on a cash basis and is not very expensive at all. I did have to convince him right away that I could not see him the three times a week he preferred and reassured him that I understood that it meant that it would take longer for my joints to start staying put. He has done more for my knee pain than a Dr ever has including helping my recovery from a meniscus injury three years ago.

You must not live in America?

Sorry to hear you can't see a doc

Over time an injury like this will only get worse and become more painful, but you can probably live with it several years before you are in so much pain you have to get it taken care of. Best of luck!!

You can probably just stabilize it with a knee brace for a month or two and let it get better on its own. My husband has dislocated his knee a couple of times. The first time, the ER popped it back in place and that was it. The second time, he fell off a ladder and dislocated it at work. They took him to the ER in an ambulance, put his knee back in place, and gave him a leg brace and crutches. He had to follow up with an orthopedic surgeon, who did a MRI and said if my husband was an athlete, he would recommend surgery, but since he wasn't, it could heal with rest and the brace.

I hate to tell you, but a hospital doesn't have to treat an uninsured person for something that's not life-threatening. They will probably do a couple x-rays, wrap it with an ace bandage, give you crutches if you can't put your weight on it, prescribe 800mg ibuprofen and tell you to follow up with a doctor because you might need surgery but they aren't going to do it without any insurance. (That happened to me when I broke my leg, I had just gotten my tax refund so I had $5,000 in the bank, so I thought I could get treatment without insurance. The hospital asked for $400 up front, did x-rays, put a splint on my leg, and told me I needed surgery but I was not to ever come back to their hospital because I didn't have insurance. By the time I got out to the car, the splint had fallen off and the bone ends were grating together. I spent the next day calling doctors and no one would see me without insurance, even when I told them I had money and would pay cash. I had to apply for the county uninsured healthcare and wait a month to have surgery.)

It's a knee sprain. I have a spiffy knee brace and I'll be fine in about a week. They did recommend seeing the orthopedic specialist. And since this happened on NJ Transit bus it's considered a motor vehicle accident and they are going after their insurance. No out of pocket for me thank goodness.

There are currently 48 million uninsured Americans, how does being uninsured signal non American status??

You are pretty good to have diagnosed and determined the long term prognosis of an injury you haven't seen and which is described in less than 2 sentences...

I've been practicing in Orthopaedics for over 20 years and I wouldn't presume to make the diagnosis and prognosis you seem so sure of....

Uh, haven't you heard the news about Obamacare??? It's the law now - you HAVE to acquire insurance in America

Our OP should be making efforts to apply right now as a matter of fact.
