I had this done three months ago. It was uncomfortable but didn't hurt. The Dr put on a glove and put some type of lubricant on it and it took like 30 seconds. Maybe your
Dr has large fingers.
Where I live you can get a PSA test (simple blood test) instead, if you're squeamish.
The blood test (PSA) is only part of the exam. The DRE is done in order for the doctor to feel the prostate for tumor.
My husband had a low PSA that rose slightly. But he felt a lump on the prostate and sent him to a urologist and then had a biopsy which showed prostate cancer.
