This happens every few months, I wake up and one of my fingers is swollen and painful (painful to bend). Its always just one finger and the finger varies. It lasts for a few days, sometimes longer. I've had blood tests to rule out arthritis. Any idea what could cause this? The doctors always end up saying I must have just hit my finger somehow but I can never recall hitting or hurting the finger before it happens.

Sometimes blood tests don't show arthritis. What your describing sounds like the beginning stages of Rheumatoid arthritis or Psoriatic Arthritis.

How long do the beginning stages usually last? As this has been going on for over 6 years now and hasn't progressed at all.

This happened to my daughter, and after extensive testing, it was decided that she probably has rheumatoid arthritis, although the markers did not show up in her blood tests. She's being treated for RA, and is generally doing well, but she has painful flare-ups now and then.

I don't know. Have you seen a rheumatologist about this?

But I do know someone who had similar problems like you described and when they tested blood it did not show the RF factor. That is what the Dr is looking for.
This woman later had many swollen joints and Dr's said it's RA but still it didn't show the RF factor in blood tests.

Just thinking that Lyme disease also can cause painful swollen joints at times.

I used to have the same. Arthritis tests came negative. I went on ""homopathy"" hope I spelled it correctly plus humidifier! It helped but it has to be consistant

check into Polychondritis. Has to do with inflamed cartilage. Sore finger joints is one of the many symptoms. Maybe you have other symptoms but didn't think they were related.
