About a month ago I started running. My wife runs and participates in a few 5K's each summer and I thought it would be fun to join. And....I'm getting chubby, my goal was to lose about 10 lbs. The first week of running went good. The pain started half way throught the second week. I think it was a tuesday and I hit the 5k mark. I waited a day and it went away almost completely. Hit the 5k mark again on a thursday and it came back. waited 2 days and it went away almost completely again. Then I ran 4.8 miles on that sunday and my knees were so bad I was having a hard time walking.

I did a ton of research and came up with Pes anserinus bursitis. That my self diagnosis from internet research...i know i know... Everything that I found on the bursitis matched my symptoms.

My question is...is anyone familiar with this, and if so how long should I wait to start running again? My knees are feeling much better(around 90%) and I was thinking about trying a short run(a mile) today or tomorrow. I did get sized and fitted for a better shoe yesterday and am dying to try them out!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

You may want to spend some time in a pool. That will help with your knees and well swimming is good exercise. It also helps avoid problems with the knees because when people get overweight and start working out they can mess up their knees while in the pool doing exercises that knee issue can be avoided.

When I have not exercised for awhile, then suddenly start exercising again, I feel all sorts of aches and pains.

I give it a break for a few days, then exercise again when I feel "recovered". Listen to your body, take it easy at first and build yourself up. Maybe a mile this week, two next week, three after that, etc.

For someone else it may be to walk one block this week, two blocks next week, etc.

Also read about "glucosamine chondroitin" which does me wonders with tendon/joint problems. (Consult with your physician before using of course.)

You can swim or bike if you want to workout without the knee pains. Running can do this for some people, it's really based on form and technique.

If you just started running a month ago there is no way you should be trying to run 5 miles at this point. Anyone will develop knee or other leg problems if they try to advance mileage that quickly.

If you follow a program like the popular Couch to 5K plans you will find that you don't event get up to 3 miles for about 8 weeks.

^^^^^this.

There is now way you should be running 5k after only beginning to run one week prior. I would imagine if you continue to do this you will end up with a major injury.

There are muscles involved in running, just like weight lifting or any other sport. They need time to repair and develop. If you started strength training you wouldn't begin lifting using the heaviest weights, you'd work your way up to heavier weights. Same with running, you work your way up with distance.

Make sure you are stretching after your runs, you can do a lot of damage without it.

You bit off wayyyyy more than you can chew

And if you are doing that running on road surfaces instead of a treadmill you're doing even worse damage than you realize.

To quote my orthopedist, each knee has a finite amount of "bends" in it, so you need to be sure you are using those bends wisely over the long haul or they will need to be replaced sooner rather than later.

And please, do not forget to stretch properly before and after you run or next thing you know you'll be here telling us how bad your shin splints are, among other things like pain in your hips

Set smaller more reasonable goals and gradually build up to that 5k, you still have time to do it right! Elevation, ice and ibuprofen after every run would be helpful too. Best of luck!

Thanks for the pointers so far! And I now realize that I was running to far to quick. But it wasn't my goal to run that far in such a short period of time. I was more like...I'm running, I feel great, I'm going to keep going. I never had a goal of 5 mi the last time I ran, it just happened. But, if I could take it back I would!

Still...has anyone had the same problem, and if so how long did it take to heal?

thanks again

I've usually been wrong when I tried to diagnose myself with running injuries so I won't try to diagnose you. My suggestion is to use ice and rest until the pain goes away completely before starting to run again. You didn't list your age so I'm assuming it is not arthritis, so glucosamine, chondrotin, etc. will probably not help.

You mentioned about getting fitted for shoes. Having the wrong kind of shoes can quickly cause various leg problems. You need to be fitted by someone who is knowledgeable about supination and pronation. Stores like Dick's, Finish Line and Foot Locker do not do this. You need to go to a specialty running store where they will actually watch you run.

In regard to stretching, some runners never stretch. I highly doubt that a lack of stretching caused your problem. Stretching can help some problems and becomes more important as you get older.

I agree with many of the other posters here who say that you started too quickly. Rest, ice and then start over again more slowly. If the problem reappears, than see a sports medicine doctor who can diagnose exactly what the problem is.
