Am I on the right site to connect with ex-smokers struggling with their quit?

You are now in the correct forum. I quit smoking about five years ago. Why don't you read this thread to get an idea: How to Quit Smoking Cigarettes?

I'm also 5 years since my last cigarette. I must have forgotten what it was like to be addicted to the stuff as looking back quitting after smoking for 40 years was as easy as deciding to just not smoke anymore, my current addiction is a much tougher nut to crack=FOOD.

I quit by using E-cigs and slowly lowering the nicotine dosage.

Do you fixate on how long it's been? Stop that! I quit 3+ yrs ago by switching to an ecig. I noted the date but not each day. The ecig makes it easier and seems to be safe.

Edit:
Here's another for you. Imagine something you hate to eat. For me it was peas. Knowing how bad cigs really are I just transferred my hate from peas to cigs. A few weeks after my last cig I took a drag off hubby's cig and it was awful. Awful enough that I'd never want to taste that again. Just like with peas. I was gagging in no time. Never again.

Definitely try ecigs. They mimic smoking but have no tobacco or other chemicals in cigs. You can vape ecigs with or without nicotine. I recommend starting with around 24% nicotine (the juice comes premixed with the nicotine % you want, so you don't have to fool with formulas).

I also recommend not making a huge effort to stop smoking whilst trying ecigs. Let it happen naturally. If you feel you seriously want a cig, smoke one and don't pile guilt on yourself.

I know someone who quit by eating baby food prunes when he craved a cigarette. He allowed himself to have one, but not until he ate his serving of baby food prunes. It took him about a month to quit completely, and he lost a few pounds in the process.

Well, that's certainly a new approach. lol.

I wonder if it would have worked for me with cooked spinach. That slimy stuff is the worst thing on planet earth. Probably not. I would have needed to smoke up an entire pack just to get the taste of spinach out of my system.
