This has never happened to me before I'm in my mid 20s. For the past 2 months I've found my appetite to be suppressed, and as soon as bread touches my tongue sometimes I feel like gagging or coughing. Munching on bread and other carbs makes me cough periodically.
I used to love eating food, I thrived on eating complex carbohydrates and food. Now eating is like a chore and I force myself to eat to avoid getting a headache from not eating food. This could not have happened at a worse time. I'm busy with presentations, investments, and started consulting at a boutique consulting firm as a graduate level intern.

I would first rule out physical causes. It could be some sort of muscle spasm in your swallowing muscles or something like that. Ask your doctor for a prescription to get a swallow study done. They'll do it at your local hospital, usually a speech therapist is involved. It doesn't take long, they have you eat different things and drink different things while "watching" you swallow with an x-ray machine. They can tell exactly where in the swallowing process things are going wrong. Videofluoroscopic Swallowing Study
I have allergies and will cough if I am exposed to something I am allergic to. Like right now in the spring I'm coughing a lot due to allergens in the air.
Also I think I am mildly allergic to peanuts - I will sometimes cough after eating peanuts or peanut butter.
Anyway you might want to experiment with breads made from different things. Gluten free, whole grain, white, corn break, others?
it sounds like achalasia and it can be serious my dear sister has it and so does my dad . You can google it and find out about it . Good luck and I hope you will consult a ENT or a gastro dr for the problem .Achalasia
