I am so mad! Honestly, what I did to injure this wrist (thankfully my left one and I'm right handed) shouldn't have done this damage. I picked up a heavy piece of luggage but it wasn't THAT heavy - and twisted it backwards. Anyway, my doctor thinks it may be related to the damage that taking Cipro for one week five years ago did to my Achilles tendons (I had to have them both surgically repaired but that's another story).

Anyway, we leave for vacation in just a few days - TO THE BEACH - and I'm in a brace and I am not a happy camper at ALL. MRI and arthrogram showed a tear in one of the tendons and a complete tear in the TFCC disk whatever that means. Followup appt with sports doc tomorrow and he has told me he will probably try a cortisone shot first but get mentally prepared for possible surgery. What? ALL I DID WAS PICK UP SOMETHING I'VE BEEN PICKING UP FOR YEARS. GRRRRR.

Anyway, if anyone else has ever had this, please share your story. Thanks!

Doesn't take much trauma to result in a TFCC tear but highly unlikely that it has anything to do with taking Cipro 5 years ago. Never heard of an association between Cipro and TFCC tears.

TFCC is analogous to the meniscus in the knee both are cartilage discs and both act as shock absorbers. Tears are similar too in that only the outer rim has a blood supply so central tears can't heal.

Bracing, NSAID's and injections are all reasonable treatments and if the symptoms subside then surgery is not needed

If symptoms do not improve with conservative care then surgery is often considered and there are several different types of procedures that can be done.

You say you are seeing a Sports Doc? This condition is usually treated by a Hand Surgeon, if it comes to surgery I would see someone who specializes in the treatment and that is typically board certified hand surgeon..

It goes without saying that bluedevilz knows what he's talking about here, but ^ this. If you need surgery, see someone who is fellowship trained and specializes in Hand surgery.

I've never had this but it could be a sprain and can heal on it's own. Why so many go to the surgery route...talk about grrrrrrrrrr And even tears can repair on their own. Sorry it happened and especially on the way to the beach...So much we can't control. Moderator cut: off topic

1. You have never heard of this before, your admission above ^

2. If you read the OP, she had the appropriate test, MR arthrogram, TFCC tear has been diagnosed...so, no, not a "sprain"

3. You don't know what a TFCC tear is yet you feel free to opine that they "can heal on their own"???? How would you know, since you don't even know what it is??? In fact they almost NEVER heal on their own but symptoms can and do subside so no surgery, isn't always needed...

4. If surgery is required, and it often is due to symptoms, it is very effective and safe...

5. Why people feel the need to offer advice and opinions on medical treatment for subjects that they no nothing about talk about grrrrrr!!

It makes it that much easier to discount their "advice" as long as the person asking the question keeps reading! Eventually the more credible information shows up and the outlying opinion pieces get discarded. A tip: if the reply starts right off with "I've never had this problem but...." or "I don't know about this, but...." chances are you can safely ignore it.

That's right folks I don't know it all, but I do know the body can heal with many other options. Drugs and surgery are NOT the only two options for healing ligaments, tendons and the like. And steroids are known to continue to break down the joints. There are so many avenues of healing to look into today and we can find so much at our fingertips...to be locked into the old treatments...nope not me.

Oh, no! Kathryn - I'm so sorry this happened to you. Just wanted to say that I totally agree with what bluedevilz recommended. Please do consider seeing a qualified hand surgeon. The hand is a very complicated part of the body. Nothing wrong with Sports Docs, but please see a hand surgeon for this issue.

I hope you are still able to go on your vacation and enjoy it.

Well, I've had two doctors (both orthopedic doctors) tell me that this is probably Cipro related, so I'm just going by what they have said. I do believe that Cipro weakened my tendons and I personally don't think there's a cutoff time wise for when damage eventually shows up. One of my Achilles tendons disintegrated two years after I took the Cipro (the first one was a few months after taking it - well, I think it was damaged immediately but became impossible to ignore a few months later - I never did actually injure either of my Achilles tendons and the only explanation that the orthopedic specialist could piece together was the Cipro - he also told me after the second disintegration of the other AT that all my joints were at higher risk most likely).

Most of the tendinitis and tendon ruptures affect the Achilles tendon, behind the ankle. But the agency has also received reports of tendinitis and ruptures in the shoulder and hand. Tendons connect muscle to bone.

Fluoroquinolones are antibiotics that kill or stop the growth of bacteria. While these drugs are effective in treating serious bacterial infections, an FDA safety review found that both oral and injectable fluroquinolones are associated with disabling side effects involving tendons, muscles, joints, nerves and the central nervous system. These side effects can occur hours to weeks after exposure to fluoroquinolones and may potentially be permanent.

I am seeing an orthopedic specialist at a Sports Injury hospital. I'll find out tomorrow if he is a hand surgeon.

Thanks for the additional information!

It's not a sprain - I've already had the MRI and arthrogram and they both show a tear in a tendon and a complete tear of the TFCC disk, whatever that is.

I think tomorrow I am just in for a brace (well ,continuing a brace) and a cortisone shot. RICE and my husband is not letting me pick up anything, which is nice. I plan to walk along the beach, eat fabulous seafood, relax, and drink beachy drinks - we'll see how things go after I get back!
