8 hrs. on average.
It varies with season/time of year-as well as depending on the particular occasion,
such as if I can't fall asleep early enough but also have to wake up sooner than I'd like.
Less sleep in summer (when it's warm & bright), more sleep in winter (when it's dark & cold).
I go with the empirical feedback my body gives me-if I feel sick with weariness, then I need more sleep than I've gotten.
I sleep about 8-9 hours a night, sometimes more on the weekends. My wife thinks I sleep too much, but if I sleep any less, I just don't feel awake and alert. I also exercise pretty heavily - when I only do light workouts, I tend not to sleep as much.
I think need for sleep may be hereditary. My wife's family are generally fairly short sleepers (they only sleep 5-6 hours a night, and my wife's brother's four year old kid only sleeps like 10 hours a night, not a lot for a kid), but people in my family sleep about 8 a night, a little less on my mom's side of the family. My sister, brother, and myself all are pretty heavy sleepers, and always have been.

Im super busy and my body just got used to sleeping this little
plus side: i get to do a lot of things and im usually happy
down side: im always tired and a lot of times my biggest desire is go to sleep (wich i cant do of course)
I usually get 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night. But unfortunately, tonight is one of those nights, where I can't get to bed.
