You must be my twin. Have a callus on each sole, outer aspect, about midway from front to back. Self-diagnosis is over supination. Also wear nothing but New Balance.
Podiatrist just shrugged his shoulders at my self-diagnosis and said I "must've stepped on a stone or something" which is nonsense. (Didn't think much of this doc; must've caught him on a bad day.)
Anyway, after he sliced-off some of the calluses, he told me to rub the areas after showering for 5 minutes with pumice stone, and then apply "CeraVe" foot cream which he sold me for $15 for a 3 oz. tube. (I'm sure you can get an over-the-counter skin softener much cheaper.)
Instead of following his advice, I periodically use a bastard file, the same file that I use for gardening tools, and scrape the calluses. There's always some pain even after the self-treatment, but life's tolerable, including a walking/running exercise regimen.
