I've been experiencing a rather weird phenomenon off and on for the past 15 years --- ribbon shaped stools !!
It started when I was 30 yrs. old and has intermittently occurred about every 6 months or so. I will look in the toilet bowl after a dump and see flat, ribbon-shaped stools --- sometimes a light gray color but usually light brown. I went to see a gastroenterologist about this around 2002 and he did some basic lab tests and even a colonoscopy and found nothing wrong. He said this could just be normal GI irritation perhaps from some dietary reaction to specific foods or maybe even stress causing my bowels to "act funny" to produce these ribbon stools. I've read that people who suffer from IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) often complain of ribbon stools, but I don't really have any of the symptoms of IBS.
In the last year, I seem to get gassy after drinking milk so maybe I'm becoming lactose intolerant, but would this make these weird stools?
Anyone else experience this strange fecal oddity ??
This used to happen to me sometime when I got my period. I suspect my bowels were inflamed, irritated, swollen and compressing the passage was out (ie, the swelling made less of a wide opening in the colon so the BMs came out thinner through the thinner passage way.)
Anything that reduces inflammation in your body and bowels should help. For me NSAIDS, sunshine and exercise helped.
