I had my gull bladder taken out in october of 2009, and ever since I've had this pain in my upper abdomen. It's a sharp stabbing tearing pain but at the same time dull and achy it shoots into my back and hurts soo bad! It comes on suddenly and only lasts for a few minutes tops. I've been to 1000 doctors but no one has a answer they always try to blame it on acid reflx but I know it's not! It almost feels like my gull bladder all over again, It's almost worse than when I had my gallbladder in!! Someone please help me If you can relate to my situation or if you know what this horrible pain is!

I have had my gall bladder out now for 3 months and I still have pain that starts under my right rib cage, then radiates to my back. My stomach swells up so bad and the pain is comparable to what I think a heart attack would feel like! I mean, doubled-over and crying, while having trouble breathing, until it subsides, which is anywhere from 20 min to an hour! I have had 2 c-sections and this hurts WAY WORSE!! I take Prilosec every day and have lost 21 lbs since my surgery, but this on-going problem is TERRIBLE and I don't know what to do about it!! Does anyone have a solution? TKS!

Default Sphincter of Oddi dysfunction

Anyone having episodes of pain after removal of the gallbladder should see a gastroenterologist and ask to be evaluated for sphincter of Oddi dysfunction. See here for a technical discussion of the condition, its diagnosis and its treatment: Sphincter of Oddi Dysfunction: ****Introduction****

For those of you who have just recently had surgery, some of the symptoms may just be related to the surgery itself, and may get better without any treatment.

I had my gallbladder laproscopically removed 3 weeks ago, and I wanted to come on here and post my results because people's horror stories really scared the hell out of me when I read them before getting the procedure done - in fact, I almost didn't get it done because of the side-effects that people spoke of. My stats, so that you know them: Female, 29 years old, 5'6, 150 lbs.

If you need to get your gallbladder removed, don't fret too much - while there are certain less-than-ideal side effects that CAN happen, the fact of the matter is that they usually don't. Gallbladder surgery is THE most performed surgery in the USA with over 500,000 operations performed each year. The handful of people online who post serious problems are the minority - the vast majority of people experience little or no side effects, and therefore don't go looking for gallbladder forums to post to.

I had my surgery 3 weeks ago, and I've been pleasantly surprised with how few side effects I've experienced - the procedure was a cinch, I went home the same day. It was quite painful to use my abdominal muscles for about 3 days - I was on Percocet for about that long. After the 3rd day, it was still painful (obviously, I mean they DID cut me open) but it was bearable with just an OTC pain reliever. Getting off the Percocet quickly is definitely something I'd advise, as it constipated me pretty badly - I had to take stool softeners, a laxative, and milk of magnesia to get my bowels moving (don't be afraid to take these - they make pooping unpleasant, yes, but pushing is NO fun right after surgery... Gross? Yes. But the softer, the better).

Now that I'm off the Percocet, I go once every day in the afternoon and that's it - I have absolutely no dietary restrictions, I eat whatever I want. One thing that I've noticed is that I'm unable to eat as much as I did before, and I've lost a few pounds since the surgery, so that's a positive side effect. I don't have any emergency poops, I'm not running to bathrooms. My cuts are healing nicely, but aren't all the way healed so I can't speak to scarring - but they are very small, the 2 in the center of my stomach are about 1" wide and the 2 on my right side are about half an inch. I'm still sore, but healing nicely and hoping to be back at the gym in a couple weeks - I was walking around by the end of the first week.

Anyway, since there's so much negative out there on this subject, I figured I'd post something positive - the surgery and the recovery, while not the most pleasant thing I've done this year, weren't as bad as I thought. The side effects weren't either Good luck!

I also had my gallbladder removed in july 2007. A few weeks later my pain returned but a lot worse. Every week or two my pain feels like I'm being stabbed right under my sternum. I vomit non stop as well. I have a high pain tolerance and it is the worst pain I have ever had. I have had 6 endoscopy procedures as well as 2 colonoscopies. 2 mri's 5 ct scans and a lot of xrays plus a whole bunch of other procedures. I've seen 4 different GI specialists and noone can find the problem. I have been in the hospital for 3 weeks this time now and still no answer. I have tried all that I can to find an answer. I have been told its acid reflux or its all in my head or its stress but there is no way that's it. I don't know what else I can do. if anyone had a similar issue I would love to hear about it.

I have had blood work done and everything comes back negative. They keep putting me on acid reflux medication, but this is NOT it. They told me this 2 months before my gallbladder was removed and now they're still telling me acid reflux, it's not that ! It is becoming a problem, sometimes i worry about leaving the house, the pain puts me in a state i can hardly move or talk. By Feb my doctors want to start tests but I think they should start now, this pain is too much. Hopefully this will all work out for the best. Everyone going through this you're in my thoughts.

I have had the same thing for 13 years now, docs have given up and now I take 12 hour pain meds that don't do much, but since they eventually think you are a drug addict, I have no other option that to live with severe pain daily. I hope for your sake and mine that you find a cure and I and so many others will get the pain relief we so desparatly need.

Look at the link I left for pacreatic cancer. I don't mean to scare you, but after reading it, I remembered this post from yesterday and wanted to come and give you the link just in case.

Is it possible it's coming from the pancreas? I'm not saying cancer but something may not be right with it. Here's a picture of where everything is located (http://www.fairview.org/healthlibrary/content/aha_pancreas_art.htm - broken link)
I have had the same thing, mine happens on a daily basis, 12 hour pain meds...been to many doctors, specialists and many ercp's, nothing for a cure...please let me know if you find help!
