I've had two done. Prep was absolutely horrid both times. The actual procedure was also horrid, the first time they didn't sedate me at all and I screamed loud enough that the whole waiting room heard. The second time they tried to sedate me but didn't give enough drugs so the sedation didn't work so again horrible pain.
Get PREPOPIK. It's 2 5oz drinks, plus a ton of water. No disgusting 64 oz of prep liquid.
The prep isn't bad...for me. I don't have to sit on the throne for hours, I lie down and get up when needed, and lie down again. Luckily not a big deal.
I've had colon cancer...twice. The minor inconvenience the day before is MUCH better than the alternative.
Personally, I just could not do the prep.. just couldn't. So what I did was start a clear liquid diet on Friday night, and took regular over the counter laxatives. Nothing but clear soup and jello from Friday evening on. No complaint from the doctor on Monday about a bad prep.

Once was more than enough for me! A colonoscopy is a piece of cake compared to some of the other diagnostics and treatments I had to go through, the lingering burns from the radiation treatments, etc. There's also peace of mind in being able to see for myself that I am still cancer-free and knowing that they are cleaning out all the polyps that could become cancerous later on.
Just how bad is the procedure? My doc recommends I go for my first one.
Has anyone had the Virtual Colonoscopy, called CTC? It's supposedly less invasive.
Thanks.
I was like you and used every excuse to avoid one. When I needed an upper GI I got the colonscopy as well. I had never been put out before but the whole thing was a relative breeze. As others have noted, you think you're alert, next thing the Doc is telling you the results. The stuff you drink gets to you a bit as you approach the end, but the apprehension of it all is much worse than the prep and procedure itself. Do it and get it over with and you'll be glad you did.

is Prepopik an OTC or did your internist order it? 2x colon cancer wow, bummer. I know you're a believer in the procedure!!!

so you just disregarded the prep orders, did your own method and all was clear???
Must say that never occurred to me

I kind of boggled at that post. What does "just couldn't do the prep" mean? If you have some medical condition that puts you at risk if you drink the normal laxative stuff, surely this is something you should discuss in advance with your doctor and have him/her prescribe you something else. Or do you mean you just *wouldn't* drink the stuff? If you show up for your appointment without having done the proper cleanout, you are just wasting everyone's time since they won't be able to see everything they need to see.
Eating a light diet for a few days before the prep makes it easier, from those who have had the colonoscopy several times.
I'm not sure how effective colonoscopy is in screening for people without either history or family history of the disease, but its definitely a lot better to catch your colon cancer at an early stage when it can be treated by chemo or snipped out during the colonoscopy.
Colon resection is a tough operation on the patient, something you definitely want to avoid if you can.
