I don't drink that often, usually just go out with friends on the weekends to bars/clubs. I have gone on stints in my life where I would be completely sober, lasting anywhere from a few months to a few years. When I drink I just don't feel healthy. We all know that it kills brain cells and is hard on our livers, and it slows me down and makes me waste money and time being hungover.
As of Monday I have decided to give it up for good. This does not mean I can't go out with my friends, it just means I won't drink when I go out. I've always been more mentally strong without alcohol/drugs and I think that's the direction I need to take in order to grow and advance in my life.
If any of you want to share your experiences in quitting, please be my guest.
I started drinking to go out to bars and meet people. When I realized all the people I met at bars were useless drunks - not friends - not worth knowing, then I had no further need to drink. So I stopped drinking. Simple as that!
I'm meeting a much better group of people walking my dogs around the neighborhood and talking to neighbors. That is a LOT cheaper as well!
I agree with you as well. The 'friends' I do have that go out focus their lives around alcohol. Also, the women I meet out are just looking for one night stands, which isn't bad, but isn't good either.
I play music live and I will be playing at bars often, so I need to learn how to cope with alcohol around me instead of thinking alcohol is the devil.

I gave up drinking for similar reasons. I just don't feel good after a drinking, even if it's just one drink. I have just as much fun as before, maybe even more because I'm totally myself and in control of myself. On rare occasions (like twice a year) I will have one glass of wine or a beer in a social setting but I really have no desire to consume alcohol on a regular or even a semi regular basis. I don't miss it at all.

If working in a bar and not drinking watch the people that are drinking. Learn from the ones that acting like idiots.

I played pool at bars after quitting drinking. I just drank soda pop. It is difficult after about 10:00 pm when they all start to get drunk, loud, and obnoxious - and you are not drinking. They can drive you nuts! (I don't know how sober bartenders can stand it?)
Anyway if you are playing music, then you will not hear them, not need to listen to them. On breaks I suppose you could go outside.
Haha, yeah I bet I'll feel the same way after awhile. I like to joke around and have a good time so I think I'll be able to deal with it. I'm not an alcoholic or anything, so staying away from alcohol or thinking that it's horrible is stupid IMO. I just know there are way more pros to not drinking than pros when drinking and I want to better myself as an individual.
Pros: save time, save money, save brain cells, save liver, healthier mentally/physically, less drama, more productive, more focused.
As someone who does enjoy my wine I have no intertions of quitting, especially at my age, but more power to those of you who do quit or have quit. Just make sure you do not become judgmental. It is easy to do and not everyone who enjoys a few drinks over the weekend or even daily has a drinking problem or are bad people. Most are everybit as intellingent and level headed as those who don't touch liquor. There are exceptions to all rules though. Even within families most of us have all levels of drinkers or non drinkers. I love my wine, my husband likes a weekend drink and a glass of wine, but if he had to give it up it would not faze him; all of our kids enjoy wine, beer or whatever, none of them abuse it. Our grandkids the same: one granddaughter was the d drinker for her friends in high school and college. She will, on a rare occassion have a rum and coke or something; maybe twice a year. The other granddaughter, her younger sister loves her wine, but never thinks of having a drop while she is pregnant. My brother hasn't had a drink in maybe 30 years.
