My husband is overweight with low sex drive and my friends husband gives him prescription testosterone gel to try for 5 days. I just don't think it's safe without asking a dr. What is your thoughts?
Drugs are prescription usually because they are dangerous under certain circumstances and are best only prescribed by someone who knows what he is doing! (i.e. a doctor.)
I read all over-the-counter drug labels and read about prescription drugs I am prescribed. I have read some scary stuff that some drugs can do under certain circumstances!
So at a minimum he should at least read all about the drug he was given or maybe you can do that and warn him if he is doing something dangerous. Can you find out the specific drug name and concentration/dosage?
The best advice would be for him to NOT use it without consulting a physician, but I realize some men do not always listen to advice and will do as they wish.
Excessive weight can be a side effect of low testosterone. My system just about shut down producing testosterone. Appx 25% of normal was my level, easily tested through a blood test. Now, I use injectable, much cheaper than the gel, and the gel just didn't work for me. It is a pain in the rear...literally. . But I have far more energy. Just have to watch my PSA level (side effect ).

It is NEVER a good idea to take someone else's medications. Not ever.

How old is he? If he's 50-ish or older, it could be worth a try, as long as he's careful with the dosing. Compared to how much we hear about men who refuse to try anything like this when they reach those mid-life years, the fact that your husband is open to trying this is good news. Still, he should talk to his doctor about it.
There's low-dose progesterone available over the counter for women, so there may be something similar for men. He may not be taking someone else's prescription, it may be OTC supplementing.
