I went to look at the charts too.

So...not a little overweight. You are overweight.

Pick up and move your dining room chair, now put 30-40 pounds of books on the chair.
Pick it up and move it again, is it just a little harder to pick up? Think of your body. Reality check.

Again...look at your diet.

Alcohol will cause swelling.
Soda is horrible for you.
Drink your water.
Eat your fruits and vegetables.
Stay away from fast foods.

Reality check.

I did buy those comfort shoes at Payless. I wanted to buy shoes from people who would know what I'm looking for and at a reasonable price. Shoes that could last me for 8 hours or more.
Assuming your doctor doesn't find anything majorly wrong (I think he won't, since it's not unusual for an overweight person to get swollen feet after 8 hours of standing), you could ask him to prescribe you orthopedic shoes and compression stockings. They take a plaster cast of your feet, order up high quality, durable shoes, and then put inserts in the proper places for an ideal custom fit.

These are very costly but many insurance plans will cover them - I get them through Medicare. They're often covered because they prevent more expensive problems later.

Nothing good comes from wearing Payless shoes.

Sometimes you just have to spend money on decent shoes and think of it as a work expense. My husband is a security guard supporting a family of four, so you know we don't have much money, but we spend $200/year on work boots for him because he has to be able to stand up all day in them, and to walk long distances. When we buy the pair for the year, I save the shoebox and every week I put $5 in the box. At the end of the year, there's enough in the box to buy the next pair. It would be nice if he could make a pair of shoes last longer than a year, but by the end of the year, they're pretty much trashed.

About the foot swelling, my feet were swollen before my diabetes was diagnosed. I think you'd have other symptoms (blurry vision, pins and needles feelings in legs, sleepy during the day, etc) but you could probably find a free screening if you do have any other symptoms.

This sounds like heart/circulatory issues. You are retaining fluid for some reason. This could even be a renal problem.
See a doctor immediately.
Your shoes aren't the issue here. Your health is.

Save up some money and buy a decent pair of shoes. The thing with shoes is that if you spend the money, they will be more comfortable and last forever.
I have two pairs of Danskos and a pair of Clarks that look nice and have lasted years. All three are comfortable. If I wear anything else my back hurts and yes, my feet swell sometimes too (and I'm 27, and yes, overweight but working on losing). I'm also completely flat footed and over pronate badly. Yes, they are expensive (my Clarks were $80 on sale, and I spent probably $100 a pair on the Danksos) but saving a little week by week helps.
All of the teachers I work with swear by these brands, and I have friends who work in healthcare settings who also swear by them.

The only problem with that is that the OP is on a tight budget... probably in a low-wage retail job or something similar. The OP said on the first page of this thread that she doesn't really have the money to see a doctor, so she probably doesn't have any health insurance right now and wouldn't really be able to afford orthopedic shoes.

A person working retail can now qualify for excellent health insurance thanks to the Affordable Care Act. If you are low income, your monthly payment will be subsidized so you can afford something that will enable you to see specialists if you need to. My co-pay for a primary care physician is only $5 and specialist is $10. My co-pay for generic medications is only $4.

There is open enrollment this month. Go to: https://www.healthcare.gov/
If you are not able to negotiate the website by yourself, there are brokers to help you find a plan appropriate to your needs and they are paid by the insurance company you sign up with, not you. Google "free quotes for healthcare options." You can talk to someone on the phone.

Unusual swelling of the extremities is one of the signs of heart problems. You need to get looked at.

No one can afford orthopedic shoes without insurance help, except for Warren Buffet and Bill Gates. However as Jukesgrrl is about to point out, everyone can get affordable health insurance now.

I've no idea what orthopedic shoes cost as I've never needed them myself. I was not going to comment getting health coverage through the ACA as others have already mentioned that, but with your comment above I can't hold my tongue about this subject any longer. There seem to be a lot of Liberal Democrats and/or fans of our current President on this thread (I am neither of these). I am living proof that health coverage is still out of reach for some, if not many, Americans, despite the ACA being passed. Even with subsidies, for me to buy health coverage I'd have to pay an amount greater than my car payment and nearly as much as I pay for groceries every month. People don't seem to understand that some of us just don't have the excess income to add an extra cost like that to their expenses every month. I don't have any luxuries like cigarettes, $4-5 cups of coffee at Starbucks, or going out to bars or restaurants that I can cut out of my budget to help me afford health insurance. I have a bare bones budget as it is now. Just keeping a roof over my head takes up a good chunk of my income every month. Am I supposed to give up food so I can buy health insurance? Or maybe I should get a second job and have that added stress in my life so I can buy something that the Government has mandated I buy? When our leaders in Washington, most of whom are millionaires, are living on my salary instead of salaries that are well above what the average American makes, then maybe they'd actually have an understanding of what is "affordable" and what is not.

While I don't know the OP personally, just from what I've read in this thread I suspect that she is in a similar situation to myself as far as having the extra cash every month to be able to afford to buy health insurance. If she's going to Payless to buy $30 shoes (or was that 2 pair for $30?) and couldn't or didn't want to spend the $75-100 (roughly the cost in my area) to see a doctor, how is she going to come up with the extra cash every month to buy health insurance? Plus, the lower the monthly payment of the plan, the greater the deductible you have to pay out of your own pocket before the insurance even starts paying for anything. When I looked for myself, all of the plans had deductibles in four figures, which is well over what I normally spend on healthcare in a typical year.

Perhaps the OP will be able to get a better monthly rate due to her younger age, and I'd still encourage her to check it out if she hasn't done so already. But it sounds to me like she is living paycheck to paycheck, and unless coverage for her is extremely inexpensive, even with subsidies, she probably can't afford it right now.

I doubt very much that her insurance under the ACA is beyond her means, or your means either (though you live in NYC metro, which has the highest rents in the nation). I suggest some counseling from ACA workers to get something affordable. You might also qualify for Medicaid.
