Has anyone out there had endometrium ablasion? I had been considering novasure, but I've read up to 25% of women who have these procedures end up having hysterectomies anyway, and others will still have bleeding and painful cramping. (I do not have heavy bleeding now, it would be for severe cramping.)

Also, how painful is the procedure itself?? I mean when you are in the office acually having it done.

My BFF had it done....no pain, and no more periods! She's very happy that she did it!

How old are you? If you're nearing menopause, I'd give it a go. If you're younger, then I'd try something else before having surgery.

I have friends who've had ablation done, and most of them say that it helps with heavy bleeding for a few years and then the problem comes back. Several of my friends have gone on to have a hysterectomy because the ablation didn't help enough.

I had endometrial resectioning done during a hysteroscopy. It was supposed to greatly reduce my heavy bleeding. Instead, I still had the heavy bleeding but I also started getting really severe cramps. I had an ultrasound that showed that I have a fibroid which I didn't have before my surgery. I had a Mirena IUD put in three months ago, and that has really helped with both the bleeding and the cramps.

I've also noticed that cramps seem to be worse with tampons than with pads or a menstrual cup.

I had an edometrial ablation and tubal ligation done about 9 months ago. The procedure itself wasn't too bad. There was pain involved for a couple weeks after the surgery but not unbearable. I did bleed for about 2 months after. The only thing the procedure did was stop my heavy bleeding. I don't have any bleeding but the cramps are pretty bad (like labor pains) and seem to last longer. I still get pms, bloating, mood swings, etc. I still get my period, I just don't bleed. My bleeding was so heavy that it caused me to be anemic and I had to take iron supplements everyday. The surgery was a good thing in that sense but honestly I'd rather have gotten a hysterectomy and left my ovaries. That way, I would have been done with the atrocious cramps. I don't regret getting the ablation but it wouldn't have been my first choice.

Update 10 months later: (maybe graphic) The same symptoms continue with severe cramps every month. I have been in pain 3 days straight, can't even sleep and woke up to the toilet filled with blood this am. Called the GYN and they weren't surprised. The nurse told me to monitor it and we'll talk about it at your annual visit in March. I had a feeling all a long that I am suffering with post ablation syndrome. Looks like I may end up having a hysterectomy after all.

I am just positing this hoping it will be helpful to others.

Coming up on 2 years now, post ablation. The bleeding that occurred last year only lasted about 2 months, then went back to just very light spotting. The painful cramps and pms symptoms have continued every month. I think the thing about this procedure is you think that all these things will go away but they don't. The most important thing that this procedure takes care of is heavy bleeding which is a good thing. I know that everyone is different when they get their period. Some people get barely any symptoms that only last a day or two but others get all the symptoms and it lasts 5-7 days or even longer. I have always been the later one.

That being said, would I recommend the procedure? It depends. Like I said if your are trying to relieve the heavy bleeding, yes. If you don't already have a bunch of period symptoms, yes. It helped me no doubt with the heavy bleeding and my anemia. It just does nothing for anything else and my cramps only got worse. (I didn't think they could )

In my experience, I just feel a partial hysterectomy and leaving your ovaries maybe a better option. At least maybe for me. Of course a hysterectomy is a more evasive surgery. I have not done this yet because I tried to wait it out as long as possible to see if things got better. I am not too far from menopause and my doctor felt it would carry me through.

Just some things to consider when deciding what option is best for you
