I just had a total hip replacement Mar.18 and was prescribed Percocet for pain, which the doc insists should be taken regularly so the hip can heal properly. After 10 days, I quit it. I realized my nausea and lack of appetite was all due to the pills. What else is there? Acetominophen does help but not much. Aspirin and Advil are bad for me due to gastric/esophogas problems. I am in pain all the time and not able to get around like I should. I see doc tomorrow, but am wondering if anything else could work??
Percoset sometimes nauseates me too. I've found that when I'm prescribed it, I can usually make do with splitting the pill in two. If the rx says once every 4 hours, I take one half now, the other half in two hours. If it says once every 6 hours, I take one now, one in three hours. This almost completely eliminates the nausea, while providing almost as much pain relief as if I'd taken a whole one. The other upside to this, is that it doesn't wear off to the point where I'm in nearly as much pain, when it's time to take the next dose.
The pills are scored so that you can do this. I'd give it a try. Vicodin does pretty much the same thing for me as the percosets - so for me, switching wouldn't do any good. Demerol didn't make me nauseated at all, but sadly it's very short-acting, so you have to take it more often, and it's hard-core enough that most hospitals rarely even provide it for in-patient pain relief anymore.
There are other pain meds the doctor can prescribe. Tell him that you have nausea and no appetite when you're taking it, and ask for something different.
Try Tramadol. Its a synthetic opiate. It causes less nausea (or constipation) than Percocet, hydrocodone, or codeine.
My experience has been the opposite - Tramadol makes me so nauseous I can't use it unless its a one-off whereas I'm generally fine with opiates.
OP - you could ask for an antiemetic to ease the nausea and you might find your appetite improves when you don't feel sick any more, or maybe the doctor will prescribe something else but many stronger painkillers have similar symptoms.
