If they are constantly numb, it's ulnar tunnel syndrome. Surgery is generally required for this if steroid treatment or physical therapy don't work. Had the surgery done last year- six inch incision across the funny bone- they move the nerve out of the ulnar tunnel and make a new tunnel between the ulnar tendons. My results were almost immediate- no more numbness within three weeks.
It's caused by resting your elbow on chairs (NO ARMRESTS AT WORK!) and sleeping with your elbow bent almost fully (I always tucked my hands under my head while sleeping and I used elbow rests on my chair at work). Other things, such as arthritis in your elbow, can cause it too.
