Has anyone been prescribed prozac for ibs and was it effective? My new GP wants to put me on 10 mg. I was talking librax (1 a day) but she won't prescribe it for me because it's a benzodiazepine.

That sounds bizarre?

Is she claiming it actually treats IBS, or are you depressed/anxious about having the disease?

It seems like docs are throwing ADs into every treatment - claiming they can cure hot flashes and reduce pain, for exg.

Pharmaceutical companies make big money when they can find a new use for an old drug. And Prozac is an old drug. Docs don't have time to research whether a drug is effective, they just listen to pharm reps sales pitches and read brochures.

Proceed with caution.

What type of IBS?

Librax is addictive, it's fine for occasional use, but shouldn't be used everyday.

IBS and anxiety are linked. Hence, anti anxiety medications work in many of these people.
