The natural supplements, based on my research, don't really work and are also of questionable quality, since they're not really under the FDA auspices.
How long do hot flashes go on (not individually, but collectively)?
I'm with you; get about one an hour, including all night long. Opening and closing windows, turning the a/c up and down, throwing off and then pulling up bed covers. Sheesh!
I think we're all too freaked out about cancer risks; we've all gotta go sometime...
Upon doing further research, I find that some "natural remedies" are associated with health risks, such as liver failure. Guess that's not the answer, either!
Premarin almost killed me 20 years ago. Then women were told all women should take it and for the rest of their lives. Now it is supposed to be used only for the shortest time possible and fo course not every women should take it. I wish I had never taken the first pill.
Once I finally got off.....after three attacks of near fatal pancreatitis in 18 months, the symptoms were worse than ever but at least I was alive.
I've known women who said it lasted 10 years or more and then there are some who don't have the first night sweat.

Premarin was bad stuff! Today's preparations are much safer, I believe.
Yes; it's thought to have a hereditary component, but I must take after my paternal grandmother who suffered terribly from drenching hot flashes for the rest of her life... I asked my mother when she went through menopause, and she couldn't recall! It didn't phase her.
I have been dealing with this for over 4 years-close to 5. And I have tried so many things-I don't know how many different supplements, acupuncture, Premarin cream, herbal patches, and the latest, progesterone cream. Nothing!!! A few of them seemed better for a little bit but then things got worse. I have thought about going on HRTs but then the fear kicks in. I heard that it takes about 10 years for hormones to finally level out. So, I have about 6 more years to go. But, I feel that things are finally starting to level out. It seems to go in cycles-some worse than others. Hopefully, it will get better.
There's no way I'm putting up with this for ten years... I have an active lifestyle -- hiking, biking, kayaking, dancing -- and also live in a very hot climate; already I'm sick of having a beet-red face and sweating like a pig through it all! Am taking 80 mg. soy isoflavins (sp?) per day. That's what the bottle recommends; I can't seem to get any guidance on this. If that doesn't work, it'll be HRT for me...

Don't know if that is something that I have tried-I have tried so many things that I can't remember them all. I did try soy milk at one point.
The thing is, all of my sisters didn't have too bad. Yeah, they had a hot flash or two but it was bearable. When I tell them that I am having a hot flash, they ask, "You're still have them?" I don't know how I got to be so lucky to not have an easy transition. My theory, is that I didn't have any children.
I remember seeing a menopause show on Oprah one time ages ago and one women in the first row said she was 64 and still having hot flashes. The audience gasped. I do know I had hysterectomy at age 60 and there was a huge difference in weight, dryness, temperament...everything. So long after menopause we still get some hormones in our system.

Does it matter if it has been a complete hysterectomy?..or a partial hysterectomy? If you still have your ovaries, you should still be producing estrogen.
I still have all of my lady parts, but I can feel it physically as the ovaries are shutting down estrogen production. Different parts of my body are having different symptoms, strange stuff that has never happened to me before. So out of curiosity I look it up to see if it can possibly be peri-menopause related.
I don't have any first degree female family members to compare notes with either. So I am winging it and going through this peri-menopause by myself.

BTW, let me know if the soy works. I may try it.

I actually asked my 95-year-old aunt about this (the tendency toward them is supposed to be hereditary, as are MOST things). My mother -- who couldn't even tell me when she went through menopause, it was such a non-event for her -- and she never had even one hot flash, whereas their sister (who resembled much more their father's side of the family) would be drenched with them, and it lasted the rest of her life. Likewise, I take after my father, and HIS mother suffered terribly from them. Oh, and they all had at least two children (I had none, so started menopause later; at 56). So I'm also "lucky"...
I had no idea how disruptive they were until I experienced it myself; now I notice other women sweating.
I am cautiously optimistic nearing the end of two weeks on:
Remifenin twice a day
Citracal + bone density builder - 600 mg twice a day
B12 1000mcg once a day
D3 - 4000 IU once a day
My hot flashes have reduced to next to nothing - maybe a couple a day.
And the racing heart/palpitations/irregular hearbeat/pounding pulse has lessened over the last two days to something approching normalcy.
Time will tell if this is real, placebo, or lasting.
I did get a cardiac holtor monitor for 24 hours but have yet to hear back on results from that. Doctor types kept telling me I needed to check my heart, but I just know this is menopause related.
