For a few years now I have taken Prilosec and then switched to Nexium since it's now over the counter. (When I would loose weight I I didn't need it but if a gain, I do) It always stopped acid reflux. The last 3 nights I've woken up suddenly from it? I usually sleep with a few pillows so if it happens I'm not coughing, and gasping. But why if I'm taking Nexium regularly now is it all of a sudden not working? I'm under a lot of stress lately so not sure if that's is? I haven't eaten anything out of the ordinary.
Lose weight, avoid ibuprofen/motrin, avoid large dinner, raise the bed so that you are sleeping at an incline. Continue Nexium but maybe double the dose (40mg twice a day). If that does not work, there's always surgery (Nissen fundoplication). I do have to mention there are other things like angina can also cause it.
About two years ago I started drinking a bit of Bragg apple cider vinegar mixed with hot water and a bit of 100% pure maple syrup while also stopping the use of Tums and also quit drinking milk.
I've since stopped having heartburn and acid reflux.
I've also started eating two or three salads a day, eating several honeycrisp apples a week, and avoiding all grains and have lost a lot of weight and am benefitting from this in many ways. Due to my improved diet, I don't need to consume the vinegar any more.
The only beverages I consume is water and a few cups of coffee a day.
I am happy to say I take no prescription medications.
best way to cure reflux is to stop eating refined junkfood (no wheat and corn) and go on a low carb, meat and vegetables only diet for 2 weeks. If you have a hernia or delayed gastric emptying however that will not help. Nothing will help except a fundi or LINX procedure which they won't give you if you have gastroparesis... well maybe they'd to the LINX for gastroparesis since you can still belch with LINX.
People with severe gastroparesis... I feel sorry for them... nobody should have to suffer through a life like that.
